Company:
MarshDescription:
We are seeking a talented individual to join the Risk Consulting department at Marsh. This role will be based in Sandton, hybrid and has a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.
We are seeking a hands-on, commercially minded Mining Lead with a strong mining engineering pedigree to drive value for mining clients across Africa through innovative risk management and engineering consulting. The successful candidate will be a technical “heavy hitter” in mining engineering who can shift client conversations from transactional surveys to value-adding consulting engagements, expand PRC penetration into the broking mining client base, lead a team to deliver revenue and NOI targets, and raise the visibility of our capabilities across mining networks and forums.
We will count on you to:
Client value creation and delivery
Lead high-value consulting engineering engagements for mining clients that move beyond transactional surveys to risk-informed, strategic solutions that support clients’ operational and business objectives.
Design and deliver survey and consulting scopes that clearly articulate client value (risk reduction, operational resilience, capital prioritization, insurance optimisation).
Translate technical findings into actionable commercial recommendations for clients and broking partners.
Business development & growth
Drive adoption of PRC and other Risk Consulting services within the broking mining client base.
Identify, pursue and convert new and expanded opportunities with existing clients and prospects across the mining sector.
Create market visibility through presentations, participation in industry forums, technical papers, and targeted client workshops.
Leadership, people & capability building
Lead, mentor and develop a multidisciplinary team of engineers and early-career consultants; foster transfer of technical skills and consulting best practices.
Set clear objectives and accountability for revenue, NOI and utilisation; monitor performance and course-correct as needed.
Create scalable ways of working, standard methodologies, templates and knowledge products to elevate quality and consistency.
Collaboration & cross-functional working
Work closely with the Mining Industry Leader, Client Service teams, broking teams, strategy consultants and Marsh’s global mining community to leverage expertise, co-sell services and deliver integrated solutions.
Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex client issues and ensure seamless delivery between consulting and broking functions.
Participate in global mining community initiatives and collaborate on cross-border projects.
Thought leadership & external engagement
Represent Marsh at mining conferences, technical forums and client events; publish thought leadership that highlights innovative risk management approaches.
Build relationships with key technical influencers, insurers, reinsurers and industry associations to enhance Marsh’s reputation and create referral pathways.
Commercial & operational accountability
Own revenue and NOI targets for assigned territory and service lines; prepare accurate forecasts and manage pipeline.
Ensure efficient project delivery, margin management, and high client satisfaction.
Maintain rigorous risk management and quality assurance on all technical outputs.
What you need to have:
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related engineering discipline (required).
Minimum 10 years’ professional experience in mining engineering; significant time in operational/technical roles.
Proven track record in consulting, technical project delivery or operational leadership on large-scale mining operations.
Postgraduate qualification in business, management or related field is advantageous.
Experience in insurance, risk management, PRC-style surveys or working with brokers/insurers is highly advantageous.
Demonstrable experience leading teams, coaching junior staff and delivering commercial results.
Technical skills & competencies:
Deep technical expertise in mine engineering practices, risk assessment methodologies, site survey execution and technical reporting.
Strong commercial acumen: ability to build scopes, price consulting work, and manage margins.
Excellent client-facing skills: consultative selling, negotiating, and relationship management.
Outstanding written and verbal communication; ability to translate complex technical issues into concise business recommendations.
Proven ability to develop and implement technical standards, templates and best-practice processes.
Behavioural competencies / personal attributes:
Senior technical credibility and presence.
Strategic thinker with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach.
Collaborative team leader who builds trust, empowers others and drives accountability.
Resilient, adaptable and comfortable working in diverse geographies and challenging field environments.
High integrity, professional ethics and client-first mindset.
Travel & working conditions:
Regular travel across South Africa and occasional international travel; extended site visits required periodically.
Fieldwork in operational mining environments as required.
