Edison's ASL program has been a core part of the school for twenty years and offers a rigorous, interactive two-year curriculum. The successful candidate will be a fluent ASL communicator and enthusiastic educator who can build strong student relationships, differentiate instruction, and create an inclusive classroom environment. The teacher will also collaborate with colleagues and support the broader Edison community through advisory, homework support, and school activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach ASL II with the goal of helping students progress toward Intermediate Mid proficiency, consistent with American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards.
  • Develop students' ability to communicate in ASL through original sentences and simple conversations in familiar, informal settings.
  • Create and maintain an engaging, interactive, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student participation and confidence.
  • Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate support for students with a range of learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders.
  • Employ effective and flexible classroom management strategies that support a positive, structured, and respectful learning environment.
  • Plan and deliver instruction using effective language-learning strategies, including Comprehensible Input when appropriate.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the other ASL teacher on curriculum development, instructional practices, course sequencing, and assessment.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance and student grades using PowerSchool.
  • Use Canvas to organize and communicate assignments, resources, and course materials.
  • Communicate proactively and professionally with administrators, faculty, and student support staff to ensure students' academic and social-emotional needs are appropriately supported.
  • Serve as an advisor/homeroom teacher, supporting students with organization, self-advocacy, communication, and social skill development.
  • Facilitate an end-of-day homework support session four days per week.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly faculty meetings and department meetings.
  • Participate in two all-school retreats each year.
  • Support the broader Edison community by participating in school events and activities, which may include annual fundraising events, student dances, parent/student conferences, and other community activities.
  • Establish positive and productive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and members of the Edison community.
  • Teach a quarter-length elective course at the discretion of the Principal.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the school.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, with a degree in education or equivalent classroom experience.

  • Experience teaching American Sign Language, preferably at the high school level.
  • Experience working with students with learning differences.
  • Experience using Comprehensible Input and other effective language-learning strategies.
  • Oregon Professional Teaching License issued by TSPC, or a teaching license from another state, preferred.
  • ASLTA certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Essential Attributes:
  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies for teaching ASL to high school students with learning differences.
  • Educational trends and best practices in curriculum development and instructional strategies for high school ASL programming.
  • Academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of high school students.
  • Effective classroom management techniques.
  • Plan, organize, develop, and effectively deliver a comprehensive ASL curriculum.
  • Create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom that provides an effective and stimulating learning experience for students with learning differences.
  • Assess the educational needs of individual students and utilize innovative strategies to enhance student success.
  • Review, analyze, evaluate, and communicate students' academic, social, and emotional growth with school counselors and families.
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues through clear, open, and effective communication.
  • Thrive in a close-knit community while working respectfully with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds, identities, and abilities.
  • Demonstrate optimism, resilience, and a commitment to personal and professional growth.
  • Serve as an inspiring and motivating role model for students and colleagues.
