Job Summary:
The Environmental Loss Control Consultant is responsible for evaluating and advising clients on environmental risks to minimize losses, ensure regulatory compliance, and support underwriting decisions. This position involves performing site inspections, risk assessments, technical reviews, and providing actionable recommendations to insureds and internal teams regarding environmental exposures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct environmental loss control surveys and site assessments for policyholders across various industries (manufacturing, energy, waste management, etc.).
- Identify environmental hazards, exposures, and regulatory compliance issues, such as chemical storage, waste disposal, air quality, hazardous materials handling, spill prevention, water contamination, etc.
- Prepare detailed reports and recommendations after field inspections, including loss mitigation, risk improvement measures, and compliance guidance.
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and engineering teams to inform risk selection and pricing.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to clients regarding environmental risk management, best practices, and regulatory obligations (EPA, state environmental agencies, OSHA, etc.).
- Develop and deliver training or educational materials for insureds on environmental risk topics.
- Keep abreast of changes in environmental regulations and industry standards to ensure current and effective loss control practices.
- Participate in claims investigations involving environmental losses or incidents and support claim resolution strategies.
- Build strong relationships with clients and serve as a trusted resource for questions on environmental loss control.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Safety, Chemistry, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in environmental loss control, risk consulting, or environmental health & safety roles (insurance industry experience strongly preferred).
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, hazardous materials management, pollution liability, and environmental risk mitigation.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise technical reports and present findings to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Professional certifications (CSP, CHMM, CIH, or similar) preferred.
- Willingness to travel for field inspections, sometimes regionally or nationally.
