Position Summary:

The Regional Medical Director (RMD) serves as a strategic medical leader and trusted partner to hospitals within their region. This role is responsible for supporting medical excellence, fostering collaborative hospital cultures, mentoring medical leaders, and helping practices achieve both clinical and operational success.

The RMD embraces innovation, relationship-building, and servant leadership. This position is highly collaborative and continuously evolving — success in the role is driven as much by mindset, adaptability, creativity, and emotional intelligence as by technical expertise. The RMD will have broad latitude to develop new ideas, support teams in meaningful ways, and help shape the future of medical excellence within Lakefield Veterinary Group.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Medical Leadership

  • Provide strategic medical leadership and guidance to area hospitals.
  • Help hospitals establish and advance a clear medical vision aligned with Lakefield’s values and standards of care.
  • Collaborate with hospital medical teams to ensure Lakefield hospitals are recognized as outstanding within the veterinary profession.
  • Work alongside hospital teams to identify strengths, opportunities for improvement, and pathways for continued growth.
  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure high-quality medicine and patient care are consistently delivered across the region.
  • Continually seek creative and innovative ways to improve hospital performance, culture, patient care, and team engagement.

Medical Team Support & Development

  • Meet regularly — virtually and/or in person — with Medical Directors and hospital leadership teams throughout the region.
  • Support hospitals with appropriate doctor, technician, and support staff utilization to maximize efficiency and patient care.
  • Assist in developing medical leadership training programs, medical compliance training, and medical skill development initiatives.
  • Help determine relevant educational material and topics for medical breakout sessions and regional training meetings.
  • Support mentorship, coaching, and professional development for veterinarians and medical leaders.
  • Help identify recruiting opportunities and participate in attracting and retaining top veterinary talent.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of veterinary business operations, including workflow efficiency, patient flow, client experience, and financial awareness.

Collaboration & Partnership

  • Serve as an active participant and contributor to the Medical Advisory Board.
  • Advocate for and help communicate medical initiatives, standards, and programs developed or approved by the Medical Advisory Board.
  • Partner closely with Operations leadership to provide medical insight, support, and problem-solving.
  • Support area hospitals in achieving annual practice objectives, goals, and strategic initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among hospitals and teams across the region.

Industry Representation

  • Represent Lakefield Veterinary Group professionally with industry leaders, vendors, veterinary organizations, and teaching institutions.
  • Build strong relationships that support continued innovation, education, and excellence in veterinary medicine.

Culture & Engagement

  • Assess and support a culture of continuous learning, psychological safety, and teamwork
  • Serve as a role model for clinical excellence, professionalism, and compassionate care
  • Find meaningful ways to recognize, celebrate, and support hospital teams and their accomplishments.
  • Lead with empathy, accountability, and commitment to servant leadership.

Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree required.
  • Active veterinary license in good standing; ability to obtain licensure in applicable states as needed.
  • Minium of five years' experience in clinical veterinary practice.
  • Minimum of two years in a leadership role within a practice.
  • Strong clinical background with demonstrated leadership experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication, mentorship, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to influence and lead through collaboration rather than authority alone.
  • Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving and organizational abilities.
  • Passion for developing people, teams, and hospital culture.
  • Comfortable with travel throughout the assigned region.
  • Experience in multi-site or regional practice environments preferred.

Personal Attributes:

  • Personable, approachable, and supportive
  • Encouraging and motivating, with a genuine passion for developing others
  • Collaborative mindset with a team-first attitude
  • Committed to continuous improvement, both personally and professionally

Success Measures:

  • Positive feedback from veterinarians and hospital teams.
  • Measurable impact on hospital performance and patient care quality.
  • Leadership development and collaboration with hospital leadership and teams
  • Financial performance of hospitals in regions
  • Individual performance

Travel Requirements

  • Regular travel to regional hospitals required.
  • Leading medicine and/or operational segments at Lakefield regional and national meetings,
  • Representing Lakefield at leadership events, industry conferences, recruiting events, career fairs, or veterinary colleges as periodically requested.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The Salary range for this position will be $150,000 - $175,000 annually. Final compensation will be determined by experience and qualifications.
  • 20% Bonus opportunity for meeting performance parameters.
  • Lakefield offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; 401(k) with company match; paid parental leave; paid time off; paid holidays; and additional wellness and development benefits.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role operates in a hybrid environment. Physical requirements may include:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing
  • Working at a computer
  • Frequent automobile travel and periodic airplane travel
  • Clinical practice and leadership working alongside associate doctors, medical directors, and hospital teams.

What Makes This Role Unique

This role is intentionally dynamic and evolving. The Regional Medical Director is not confined to a rigid set of responsibilities, but rather serves as a creative, strategic partner to hospitals and teams. Success in this position comes from embracing innovation, building trust, identifying opportunities, and continuously finding new ways to support teams and elevate patient care.

At Lakefield Veterinary Group, we value leaders who are collaborative, adaptable, forward-thinking, and passionate about making a meaningful impact on both people and pets.
