About Our Department

The Grounds Department is dedicated to creating and maintaining safe, welcoming, and beautiful outdoor spaces that enhance the experience of everyone who visits Denver Public Library. Through sustainable landscape management, proactive maintenance, and a commitment to exceptional service, our team helps ensure library properties remain inviting, functional, and reflective of the community we serve.

About Our Position

The Grounds Department is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of the organization's outdoor spaces. Team members work closely with Facilities, Maintenance, Operations, Event Coordinators, and other departments to ensure the grounds are clean, well-maintained, and ready for daily activities and special events.

On a day-to-day basis, responsibilities include mowing and trimming lawns, planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, and flower beds, operating and maintaining landscaping equipment, removing litter and debris, irrigating landscaped areas, and performing seasonal tasks such as snow removal or leaf collection. Grounds staff also inspect outdoor areas for safety hazards, complete routine maintenance and repairs, and respond to work orders to support a safe, attractive, and welcoming environment for employees, visitors, and the community.

What You Would Bring

• Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial irrigation systems

• Knowledge of irrigation controllers, valves, sprinkler heads, pumps, and drip irrigation systems

• Understanding of irrigation system troubleshooting, diagnostics, and water management practices

• Ability to read irrigation plans, blueprints, and system layouts

• Familiarity with basic plumbing, electrical components, and PVC pipe installation and repair

• Experience operating hand tools, power tools, and irrigation testing equipment

• Knowledge of safe work practices, including equipment operation and job site safety

• Ability to prioritize maintenance tasks and respond promptly to irrigation system issues

• Strong attention to detail to ensure efficient water use and system performance

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.

• One (1) year of experience in maintaining and repairing commercial, agricultural, or related irrigation systems. 

• A valid Driver’s License is required as a condition of employment. 

Substitutions:

A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• More than 1 year of irrigation installation, maintenance, or repair experience (residential or commercial).

• Irrigation certification or licensing (such as IA Certified Irrigation Technician) is preferred but not required.

Work Environment & Location

In this position, you can expect to primarily work in the field at all DPL branches, reporting each day to the Denver Public Library Service Center located at 1339 W Cedar Ave Denver, CO 80223.

• Typical Schedule: Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. including occasional evening, weekend, or afterhours due to weather response and holiday hours. 

•   Irrigation Technicians are provided a City vehicle. 

The Denver Public Library's branches are the arms to the community—each a unique reflection of the dynamic, diverse communities we serve. At DPL, we pride ourselves on showing up and providing support whenever there is a need. 

While you may be hired for a specific location, please know that we are hiring with the expectation that at any time, you may be required to work at any one of our branches based on operational needs. This allows our staff to experience the full breadth of Denver's communities and ensures we consistently deliver the highest level of service across our branches.

Additionally, DPL employees may be redeployed to work in other locations or capacities to support core functions of the library system during branch closures or other emergencies.
