Description

Job Title: Summer Intern 

Compensation: $20 per hour 
Department: Department assigned based on program of study 
Reports To: Internship Supervisor 
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 
Location: Harrisonburg, Virginia 
Work Arrangement: Primarily on-site; remote work may be possible for select Marketing or Sales assignments 
Shift / Schedule: 40 hours per week during the summer; schedule varies by departmental assignment and may include nights or early mornings 
Travel Requirements: Occasional local travel between Farmer Focus locations in Harrisonburg 
Employment Type: Paid, full-time, temporary summer internship (10-week program)

Role Overview / Purpose and Scope 

Farmer Focus promotes and protects generational family farms by returning farm-level decision-making and chicken ownership to farmers and empowering them to farm the way they know is best. This paid summer internship provides hands-on learning across business operations through a departmental assignment aligned with the intern’s program of study. Interns partner with their supervisors to develop a learning plan, contribute to meaningful projects, receive one-on-one mentorship, and gain exposure to multiple areas of the organization. Potential assignments include Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Sales, Customer Service, Supply Chain and Logistics, Quality Assurance, Technology, Human Resources, and Training and Development. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist with projects, assignments, and day-to-day duties while developing skills relevant to the assigned department. 

  • Work with the internship supervisor to create and actively maintain a learning plan aligned with the intern’s program of study. 

  • Receive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support throughout the internship. 

  • Collaborate with team members and cross-functional partners to complete assigned work in a fast-paced business environment. 

  • Attend all intern events and participate in company-hosted events. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the learning objectives of the internship. 

Qualifications 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited program of study or be a recent graduate. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and complete work dependably. 

  • Energetic, confident, professional, highly motivated, and team-oriented approach. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. 

  • Intellectual curiosity, openness to feedback, and a strong desire to learn. 

  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are strongly encouraged. 

  • Willingness to work a varied schedule, including nights or early mornings, depending on the departmental assignment. 

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Travel 

This role is primarily based on-site in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with the specific work location determined by the departmental assignment. Work may be performed in a corporate office or production facility, and select Marketing or Sales assignments may offer remote-work possibilities. Occasional local travel between Harrisonburg locations may be required. Some assignments require access to production environments with varying heat, wet, and chilled conditions. Hearing and eye protection are required in production areas, along with hair and beard nets as applicable. The role may require traversing a two-story staircase multiple times per day.
