Seasonal Reactor Operator Trainee Required Qualifications for Appointment

General Statement of Duties:

To be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the RI Atomic Energy Commission Research Nuclear Reactor, and to do related work as required.

Supervision Received:

Works under the supervision of a licensed Senior Reactor Operator who provides general and specific instructions, and reviews completed work for regulatory compliance and safe operation of the reactor.

Illustrative Examples of Work Performed:

  • Performs reactor pre-startup checkouts, startups, shutdown, and post shutdown checkouts.
  • Performs a wide variety of reactor and facility maintenance.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledges, Skills, and Capacities:

Possesses a thorough knowledge of elementary reactor physics and nuclear engineering with the capacity to apply that knowledge to the safe operation of the reactor.  Possesses the ability to make immediate decisions and take proper action to cope with a situation which might arise during reactor operation.

Education:

Such has may have been gained through graduation from senior high school and the completion of Reactor Operator License training at the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center.

Experience:

Such as been gained through volunteering at the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center and participating in reactor operation and maintenance activities.

Special Requirement:

Must possess a Reactor Operator License issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center Reactor, and must maintain such license.
