Summary

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) leads the Company’s technology and digital transformation initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the CIO is responsible for modernizing Greenbrier’s technology foundation and ensuring the stability, security, and performance of enterprise systems across a complex, asset-intensive, and geographically distributed organization.

 

The CIO oversees a multi-year technology transformation that includes enterprise resource planning (ERP), cloud infrastructure, Salesforce, transportation and warehouse management systems, and leasing analytics. This role is responsible for balancing near-term operational execution with longer-term strategic planning to improve technology maturity and alignment across manufacturing, leasing, and services functions within a decentralized operating model.

The CIO works closely with executive leadership, plant leaders, and commercial and leasing teams to support operational technology (OT) environments and to enable the effective use of data, analytics, and digital platforms across the organization.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Lead the Technology team in setting and executing a clear enterprise IT and digital strategy aligned with Greenbrier’s business priorities, operating model, and long-term growth objectives.
  • Lead technology execution across three core workstreams: Run (operational stability), Improve (automation and process enhancement) and Transform (platform modernization and analytics enablement).
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on technology investments, risk, and value creation.

People & Culture Leadership Focus

  • Builds, mentors, and empowers diverse technology teams, cultivating a culture of collaboration, learning, and high performance.
  • Sets clear expectations, develops future leaders, and promotes inclusive decision-making while holding teams accountable for results, security, and service quality.

Operational Excellence & Manufacturing Enablement

  • Operate effectively within manufacturing and shop-floor environments, partnering with plant leadership to support uptime, safety, productivity, and quality.
  • Collaborate to ensure partnership on solutions for operational technology, infrastructure, and cybersecurity capabilities that support distributed manufacturing and maintenance operations.
  • Ensure technology solutions are pragmatic, scalable, and resilient in asset-intensive environments.

Digital Transformation & Platforms

  • Provide leadership oversight for major enterprise initiatives, including:
  • Microsoft 365 ERP implementation in North America
  • Salesforce deployment and planned mid-year integrations
  • TMS and Costing System modernization
  • Leasing-solution RFP with an emphasis on analytics and data visibility
  • Drive simplification, standardization, and improved ownership across historically siloed systems and processes.

Data, Analytics & Leasing Enablement

  • Partner closely with leasing leadership to mature Greenbrier’s data and analytics capabilities, supporting pricing, utilization, maintenance planning, and customer insights.
  • Enable data-driven decision-making across a portfolio that spans owned assets, managed fleets, and joint ventures.
  • Establish foundational data governance and reporting disciplines that can scale with the business.

Organization, Governance & Influence

  • Lead a geographically distributed IT organization operating effectively through influence where direct reporting lines do not exist.
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships across finance, operations, supply chain, leasing, manufacturing and commercial teams.
  • Introduce clarity around decision rights, prioritization, and accountability in a decentralized operating model.

Qualifications

The following generally describes requirements to successfully perform the assigned duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or a related field required.
  • 5+ years of prior CIO experience within an industrial, manufacturing, or asset-intensive environment, including leading diverse teams to execute to the strategic plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at both day-to-day operational and enterprise strategic levels.
  • Experience leading technology across multi-line businesses and complex ownership structures, including joint ventures.
  • Strong business orientation in financial & operational expertise with executive communication skills.
  • Comfort operating in plant, shop-floor, and OT environments.
  • Ability to lead through influence in matrixed and joint-venture structures.
  • Foster a transparent & collaborative environment.
  • Change leadership capability in organizations with varying levels of digital maturity.
  • Calm, credible presence with the ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) preferred.
