Description

 Position Summary:

The Senior Manager, Civil Aviation Environmental, and Global Policy reports directly to the Vice President, Civil Aviation. The position is responsible for developing strategic direction and priorities within assigned areas of focus and coordinating industry consensus positions. A major focus of this position will be environmental aspects of current and future aircraft technologies (including sustainable alternative fuels), and advocating efficient regulatory approaches for aviation emissions, noise and potential supersonic policy. One of the key features of this position will be support for the sustainable use of chemicals within the aerospace and defense industry. This position will handle the day to day interactions with ICCAIA and responsible for tracking applicable work at ICAO.

The position will assist members with identification of critical chemicals proposed for regulation and take a lead role in drafting comment letters identifying member concerns and strategies for continued use or replacement of key chemicals used in the aerospace and defense industry. This role will engage with multiple domestic and international agencies and other trade organizations in support of AIA positions and to ensure stakeholder alignment.

The salary range for this role is $75,000-$85,000.

Key Responsibilities:

Support Environmental Committee and integrate Environmental Programs across AIA (20%)

  • The environment lead will be responsible for working directly with AIA team members to link their existing efforts on the environmental aspects of aviation improvements into the larger sustainability efforts.
  • Responsible for monitoring and communicating to the subcommittees and AIA staff critical environmental issues that are associated with the design, manufacture, and operation of new and in-production aircraft (including components and engines). Examples include (but are not limited to) advanced aviation mobility (short range electric aircraft), airspace and in-flight routing changes that reduce emissions, efforts to reduce contrails, and expansion of “green” hydrogen for fuel.Analyzes the various trends, issues, and areas of concern associated with these environmental issues to provide insight and anticipate the need for association positions and actions.
  • Coordinate efforts with the sustainability lead at AIA and the associated committees. Write white papers and articles, news items to the AIA newsletters, or other communications highlighting environmental issues and developments that have or could affect the aviation and defense industry.

Support Noise, Emissions, and Supersonic Subcommittees (25%)

  • Coordinates the efforts of the subcommittees and working groups under the Environment and Sustainability Committee established to address U.S. and international environmental policies and regulatory issues. The Noise, Emissions, and Supersonic subcommittees formulate industry positions to be presented to U.S., foreign, and international agencies, bureaus and commissions, or respond to government inquiries dealing with special areas of concern requiring industry input.
  • When necessary, supports written and oral testimony to Congress, drafts official response letters to federal proposed rules and guidance documents, and regularly meets with FAA, NASA, and EPA to understand and discuss upcoming governmental initiatives related to aviation environmental policy. Supports these subcommittees by holding regular meetings and identifying issues for their discussion and review.

Outreach on Environmental Issues with Aviation (20%)

  • This role will be responsible for outreach on the broader environmental initiatives and federal/international programs outside of AIA that could affect the aviation and defense industry.
  • Maintains liaison with environmental policy level counterparts in member companies, U.S. and foreign governments, international organizations, other associations, and academia covering technical and legislative matters to define issues and focal points. This effort will also involve coordination with AIA communications on outreach to selected environmental NGOs to understand their concerns and issues with civil aviation.
  • The Senior Manager will represent AIA at industry meetings: organizing and chairing sessions, speaking, or serving as a panelist/moderator. They will work with other organizations and trade groups to inform them of AIA positions and contribute articles and news items to the AIA newsletters, or other communications highlighting issues and developments within area of expertise and responsibility.

Engagement with International aviation organizations (35%)

  • Given AIA’s role in ICCAIA the Senior Manager will be responsible for daily interactions with ICCAIA staff, as well as ensuring appropriate engagement with ICAO working groups and meetings.
