SUMMARY:
The Director, Compliance is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the Credit Union’s Compliance Management System (CMS) and ensuring adherence to all applicable laws and regulations. This position manages a team of compliance professionals, providing direction and accountability to support a strong culture of compliance across the organization.
The position requires a seasoned compliance professional with a deep understanding of financial institution regulatory requirements. This Director should possess strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to assess risk, interpret complex regulations, and translate them into practical business solutions. The Director must also be an effective collaborator, capable of partnering with executive leadership and business units to drive compliance initiatives and support strategic objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Governance

  • Provide direct leadership, supervision, and development of all compliance staff.
  • Establish clear roles, accountability, and performance expectations for compliance personnel.
  • Serve as a key advisor to leadership on compliance risks, emerging regulatory issues, and strategic initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance & Monitoring

  • Oversee regulatory change management, ensuring timely identification, analysis, and implementation of new and updated requirements.
  • Direct compliance monitoring and testing activities to assess adherence to applicable laws and regulations (e.g., Truth in Lending, Fair Lending, UDAAP, Reg E, Reg Z, etc.).

Risk Assessment & Reporting

  • Lead enterprise compliance risk assessments and ensure alignment with overall risk management processes.
  • Deliver clear, actionable reporting to leadership regarding compliance risk posture, trends, and remediation activities.
  • Track and escalate compliance issues, ensuring timely resolution and sustainable corrective action.

Training & Communication

  • Oversee development and delivery of compliance training programs for all employees and leadership.
  • Ensure compliance requirements are effectively communicated and understood across the organization.

Integrated Risk & Compliance Solution

  • Provide ongoing leadership for the implementation, integration, and optimization of the Credit Union’s integrated risk and compliance management platform.
  • Ensure effective utilization of system modules to drive risk identification, monitoring, reporting, and issue tracking.
  • Partner with business units to enhance automation, data integrity, and reporting capabilities.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, Law, or a related field is desired; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive compliance experience in financial services, preferably within a credit union or banking environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing compliance teams.

ADDITIONAL/IMPORTANT SKILLSETS:

  • Strong knowledge of consumer protection laws and regulations applicable to credit unions.
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical business solutions.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Effective at managing change and leading organizational transformation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, the employee must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. All employees must be able to communicate face to face or through technology with or without reasonable accommodation. Employee will be in an office environment (well-lighted, heated, and air-conditioned) typically stationed at a desk or table. Employee will be asked to sit and stand for various increments of time, and to lift/push up 10 lbs. Clerical office duties on various forms of technology are required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

All positions that have lending responsibilities must comply with all requirements under the SAFE ACT, as well as the Credit Union’s policies and procedures related to the SAFE ACT. This includes an obligation on the employee’s part to ensure that NMLA registration pertaining to the SAFE ACT is kept current. The employee must notify the Credit Union within 30 days of any changes that need to be reflected on the NMLS registry.
