Purpose
The Meat Associate is part of our Fresh team, which provides nutritious and beautiful fresh and prepared foods to our community. The responsibility of the Meat Associate includes ensuring and delivering best in class customer service while following Keweenaw Co+op’s policies and procedures in performing the duties of meat and seafood cutting, wrapping, ordering and receiving. The Meat Associate is responsible for the maintaining, rotating (FIFO), and setting/breaking down of all meat retail case displays. The Meat Associate will perform sanitation duties to ensure all equipment, floors, walls and ceilings are clean and sanitary while maintaining and following standards in food safety/sanitation set forth by regulatory authorities and Keweenaw Co+op.
Work hours: this is a full time position, 40 hours/week including one consistent weekend day/week

Essential Responsibilities and Functions
CUSTOMER SERVICE: provide a positive customer experience through the following:
- Uphold Keweenaw Co+op Customer Service Commitment, providing internal/external customer service.
- Produce food that is safe, delicious, attractive and meets the needs of our customers.
- Work with the Fresh Manager to provide meat selection that is reflective of product and pricing mix strategy, and satisfies our customers.
- Maintain familiarity with all areas of the store in order to best assist customers.
- Use appropriate phone/intercom and interpersonal etiquette.
- Communicate in a clear, direct, and respectful manner.
MEAT & SEAFOOD DAILY OPERATIONS: have a compliant, efficient meat department
- Contribute to a culture of food safety/cleanliness in the department. Keep work, equipment, retail and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting Health Department regulations.
- Complete daily inventories of product, production logs, and communicate meat department needs to the manager.
- Maintain constant awareness of product expiration dates and FIFO rotating requirements.
- Complete inventories and record department shrink.
- Validate that products received are wholesome, unadulterated and at temperatures required to support food safety.
- Conduct routine time and temperature checks for all equipment.
- Adhere to all safety, health, and Weights and Measures regulations.
- Maintain department equipment in good working order.

Working Conditions
- Frequently performs work in a retail grocery store.
- Equipment used to perform this job may include but is not limited to: Band saws, meat grinders, sausage stuffers, meat tenderizers, ice machines, knives, pallet jacks, box cutters, carts, knife sharpening stones, hand labelers, electronic scale systems, vacuum packaging machines, hand wrappers, tumblers, calculators, water hoses, digital thermometers, scissor lift, baler and compactor
- Works in temperature and dampness extremes (walk-in freezer, frozen or hot parking lot, hot kitchen, etc.).
- Utilizes hand trucks, pallet jacks, grocery carts, box cutters, electronic ordering devices.
- Utilizes office machines, cash registers, tablets, computers, fax machines, scanners, photocopiers, telephone and intercom systems.
- Utilizes multiple systems of communication and data storage, including, but not limited to, Google Workspace, Payroll software, ChefTec etc.
- May come into contact with hazardous materials and solvents.
- Moderate noise level.
- Fast paced work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures.
- Willingness and ability to learn to meet the changing requirements of the job.
- Able to work at least one weekend day regularly per week, early morning, late evening shifts as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with purchasing and merchandising.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience, particularly in a meat department, retail or natural foods store
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to use computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, and office equipment frequently.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move between 50 to 100 pounds frequently.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach above shoulder height, use repetitive motions, and climb stairs/ladders frequently.
- Ability to use fine motor skills for typing, grasping, manipulating objects with fingers.
- Ability to write or type reports, and complete checklists in written or digital format.
- Ability to read and interpret small print and alphanumeric product codes.
- Ability to work overnight, weekend and non-business hour shifts as required.
