Description of Work
If you are looking for a rewarding career in educational leadership, please consider serving as a School Principal in our Youth School at Granville Correctional Institution. This position will be a main point of contact providing leadership, guidance, and support aimed at fostering educator success through continual improvement in academic, behavioral, social emotional, and pedagogical skill areas to support students in their pursuit of attaining a high school equivalency diploma. Because this work requires leadership, flexibility, and investment, candidates with top administrative and instructional skills as well as a strong work ethic will find greatest success and opportunity.This position is located within the academic school at Granville Correctional Institution, Butner, NC (Granville County).
Reporting to the Education Services Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Institution Leadership, the School Principal serves as a core member of the education team in guiding, fulfilling, and monitoring the school’s vision, mission, core values, and goals, and should be competent at organizing and delivering
instructional and administrative leadership in all content areas to lead and support educators providing instruction to groups of student offenders of all ages. The School Principal should be effective in working with educators to create and maintain a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with the ability of each student housed in a medium custody male correctional facility.
Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Conceptualizes and upholds the mission, vision, and belief statements of the school district and broad goals of the school. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of educational programs to best meet student and staff needs, ensuring alignment with the School Improvement Plan and district goals.
· Serves as an instructional leader responsible for the teaching and learning process school-wide.
· Provides and supports appropriate professional development for staff that encourages professional growth, enhances the quality of instructional programs on campus, and provides opportunities for staff participation in the school program.
· Establishes, implements, and evaluates procedures used to carry out the daily routine of the school.
· Ensures that the school program aligns with the school district’s legal, financial, and organizational structure
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade: Based on NCDPI Salary Schedule
Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
- Documented knowledge and understanding of cognitive, affective, social, and physical development and learning processes of young adult and adult learners.
- Documented knowledge of the supervision and management processes of school staff and the ability to coach and support growth of employees performing at all levels.
- Documented knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
- Documented knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards, the North Carolina Course of Study, and high school equivalency pathways.
- Documented experience in providing instructional leadership in the context of adolescent and young adult learning environments.

Granville Correctional Institution is located in Butner, NC (Granville County). Opened in 1997, Granville Correctional Institution houses close and medium custody male offenders, primarily between 18 and 25 years of age, in both single cells and dormitories. The facility offers a wide variety of programs, including educational and vocational programs, as well as a variety of job assignments; Granville Correctional is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young adult offenders.
