Wastewater Treatment Supervisor - Public Utilities

Brunswick County Public Utilities is currently accepting applications for a Wastewater Treatment Supervisor to join our Wastewater Treatment Team.  Classified as a Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment Facility by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Brunswick County Public Utilities provides wastewater services to roughly 28,000 retail sewer customers and wholesale customers across a large service area. Our Public Utilities team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of wastewater treatment service to our customers every day. 
 
Working under limited supervision, the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor performs supervisory and advanced technical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of County wastewater treatment facilities. Responsibilities include:

• planning, organizing, supervising, and reviewing the work of subordinates involved in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities (to include training, reviewing time sheets, and evaluating employee performance).
• overseeing the work of outside contractors.
• performing various administrative duties including monitoring budget adherence and inventory control.
• establishing policies, procedures, and standards.
• establishingandmonitoringemployeeassignmentschedulesandequipmentmaintenanceschedules. 
• assisting in the preparation of a variety of reports and maintaining records as related to the utility system.

The Wastewater Treatment Supervisor will be required to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment to ensure proper installation and maintenance of various equipment integral to providing wastewater treatment services. Work also involves providing assistance with developing safety procedures, standard operating procedures, and coordinating training required for maintenance personnel.  This position reports to Wastewater Superintendent and will serve as a liaison between plant staff and management and may act on behalf of the Superintendent in their absence. 

Location & Work Schedule
This position is based out of our West Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 250 Grey Water Road, Supply, NC 28462, but will have responsibilities for all six (6) wastewater treatment plants across Brunswick County.  General office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm; however, work will also require unscheduled hours and night and/or weekend work, based on operational needs.  

This position is considered an ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE POSITION under County policy and will be required to work to maintain essential operations during inclement weather, non-emergency closure, and/or closure due to a state of emergency/county disaster.  

High school diploma (or equivalent); associate degree or certificate in engineering technology/water resources, or a vocational/technical degree in mechanics or related field, and ten (10) years of experience in wastewater treatment; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Supervisory experience preferred

• Must possess a valid North Carolina or South Carolina issued driver’s license.  
• Possession of a Level IV Wastewater Treatment License and Spray Irrigation License issued by the State of North Carolina Board of Waterworks and Wastewater Operators or the ability to obtain certifications within the probationary period.

Employee shall be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Backup-ORC for a designated facility once appropriate licensing is obtained.

 Must be physically able to operate a variety of wastewater plant machinery and office equipment including various wastewater pumps, aeration equipment, mixers, computers, two-way radios,etc.Mustalsobephysicallyabletooperateamotorvehicle.Mustbeabletoexertupto110pounds offorceoccasionally,and/orupto5poundsofforcefrequently,and/oranegligibleamountofforceconstantly tomove objects.Physical demand requirementsare in excess of those forSedentary Work.
