We have an exciting opportunity for an Extraction Supervisor to join our team at Heidelberg Materials UK. This is a key operational role where you’ll be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and continuous supply of extracted material, while leading people, managing contractors and driving improvements across the quarry.
Working closely with the Unit Manager, Production Supervisors and our drilling and blasting contractors, you’ll play an important part in keeping the quarry running safely and efficiently.
What you’ll be doing
As our Extraction Supervisor, you’ll take ownership of extraction activities and help ensure we achieve high standards of safety, environmental performance, quality and operational efficiency.
Your responsibilities will include:

- Holding the appointment under Section 8(1)(d) of the Quarries Regulations 1999.
- Managing contractors working within the extraction area, ensuring safe working practices and appropriate standards are maintained.
- Working closely with drilling and blasting contractors to optimise blast performance, fragmentation, blast pile shape and environmental impacts.
- Coordinating blast schedules and quarry development to maintain a consistent supply of suitable material.
- Ensuring material supplied to the primary crusher is of the right size and quality to maximise throughput.
- Working alongside Production Supervisors to ensure material availability and quality meets operational requirements.
- Carrying out and supporting daily inspections, geotechnical inspections and 5S audits.
- Ensuring haul roads are designed and maintained to support safe and efficient load and haul operations.
- Overseeing the condition, servicing and maintenance of mobile plant.
- Monitoring areas such as fuel usage, idle time, tyres, GET and plant cycle times to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Using 5S, Lean and Six Sigma principles to continuously improve performance.
- Identifying development and training requirements within the team and ensuring employees receive appropriate inductions and specialist training.
- Managing environmental impacts, including dust suppression and communication around blasting activities.
- Maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues, contractors and neighbouring communities.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone with strong operational quarrying experience who enjoys being hands-on, leading from the front and finding practical ways to improve performance.
Ideally, you’ll have:
- At least 5 years’ experience within quarrying operations.
- Explosives Supervisor and Shotfiring qualifications.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- NVQ Level 4 in SHE Quarry Operations.
- A good understanding of quarry extraction, drilling and blasting activities.
- Experience managing contractors and mobile plant operations.
- Basic Microsoft Office skills and confidence using IT systems.
- Strong health, safety and environmental awareness.
What will make you successful?
You’ll be a practical and motivated leader who is comfortable taking ownership and making decisions. You’ll be results-focused, open to new ideas and able to build strong relationships across the site.
Most importantly, you’ll be passionate about creating a safe, efficient and high-performing quarry operation, while motivating the people around you to achieve the same high standards.
