Job Description Summary
The Software Lead Engineer is the technical lead for embedded engine control software. You'll own the design of highly complex modules, critical components, or a whole software product, and integrate it across multiple systems. You'll work independently and serve as the team's technical leader. You'll drive design, development, and verification of real-time, safety-critical software in line with the program and product roadmap. You'll also guide the engineers who execute it to meet DO-178C and military software qualification requirements.Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Provide technical leadership for the definition, design, implementation, and verification of embedded software that delivers real-time control on devices such as engine controls, fuel controls, actuators, motors, alternators, valves, and fans.
- Lead architecture and design across the product and its versions. Make sure designs meet requirements for safety, determinism, performance, and maintainability, and drive reuse across programs.
- Lead impact assessments and decisions on technology choices, design and architecture, and implementation strategy. Remain able to dive into the implementation when the situation demands.
- Ensure software is developed and verified in compliance with software plans and industry standards such as DO-178C and MIL-HDBK-516C.
- Gather customer and system requirements and translate them into executable software requirements and specifications, working with systems, controls, hardware, and program leaders.
- Plan and estimate software work, and guide developers on execution and design using an iterative, team-based development approach. Identify and remove obstacles on behalf of the team.
- Direct testing of embedded software in desktop simulation and in hardware-in-the-loop (dry rig) environments. Support lab and field validation testing and data acquisition.
- Lead and participate in technical and program reviews, including requirements, design, code, and test peer reviews. Present the software status, risks, and recommendations.
- Develop action plans to resolve technical issues and problems, including issues found in the field or during integration. Make data-driven recommendations using quality tools.
- Drive efficiency across teams by eliminating duplication, improving processes, and adopting automation such as test and tool automation.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers, and develop training as needed.
- Make sure technical data is properly documented and configuration-controlled, consistent with engineering policies and procedures. Protect the Company's intellectual property.
- Support other GE businesses, suppliers, and internal and external customers.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a "STEM" major (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in a software engineering role, including embedded software development
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
Desired Characteristics
Technical Expertise
- Experience leading software through the full DO-178C life cycle (planning, requirements, design, code, verification, configuration management, and certification liaison) or military software qualification under MIL-HDBK-516C.
- Embedded development experience designing and implementing real-time software in C/C++.
- Experience with model-based design and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and SCADE.
- Familiarity with tools such as DOORS/ERM, Synergy, SIMICS, and desktop engine simulation (e.g., NPSS).
- Experience with Python, Perl, or another scripting language for tool and test automation.
- Experience with digital communication protocols such as MIL-STD-1553B, ARINC 429, ARINC 664, IEEE-1394, EADIN, and/or CAN bus, and with networking protocols such as TCP and UDP.
- Knowledge of multithreading and multicore environments.
- Knowledge of aircraft engine controls and digital electronic control systems (FADEC).
- Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles.
- Experience with requirements documentation and analysis.
- Experience coaching teams on requirements estimation, team sizing, and planning.
Leadership
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical mentorship and lead small teams.
- Influences others and builds support for ideas. Anticipates downstream consequences of decisions and explains the reasoning behind them.
- Navigates accountability in a matrixed organization. Balances competing stakeholder priorities and works through ambiguity.
- Ability to coordinate several projects at once and to plan, document, and execute programs.
- Participates in technical strategy planning, and stays current on the state of the art in embedded and safety-critical software.
Personal Attributes
- Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effective at identifying problems and solving them, using critical thinking and data.
- Proactively works with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and design solutions.
- Embraces new methods and technology that increase efficiency, and weighs the cost of change against the benefits.
