Contract Insurance Bookkeeper

Location: Red Deer, AB | Contract | Part-Time Opportunity

The Opportunity

Our client, an established organization in the insurance industry, is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to support its financial and accounting operations across multiple business entities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a knowledgeable bookkeeping professional who enjoys working independently, taking ownership of financial records, and helping improve financial reporting and operational processes.

The position will begin with an approximately one-month, full-time transition and training period, with the successful candidate working alongside the existing team to become familiar with current processes, complete outstanding bookkeeping, and assist with year-end requirements.

Following this initial period, the role is expected to transition to approximately 15 hours per week, with the potential for additional hours as the organization continues to grow.

There is also an opportunity for this position to develop into a broader financial and operational support role within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage bookkeeping and accounting functions across multiple business entities.

  • Complete account reconciliations, maintain accurate financial records, and assist with year-end preparation.

  • Support payroll administration, including CPP, payroll requirements, and related filings.

  • Review and reconcile insurance company statements, policy transactions, direct bill, and agency bill accounts.

  • Maintain accurate financial records for the insurance brokerage and related business entities.

  • Bring outstanding bookkeeping and reconciliations up to date.

  • Maintain bookkeeping for related property and holding company operations.

  • Review transactional work completed by internal staff, identify discrepancies, and maintain appropriate checks and balances.

  • Prepare financial reports and provide greater visibility into financial performance.

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and overall operational efficiency.

  • Work collaboratively with the existing team and provide continuity and support where needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Formal bookkeeping or accounting training, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience within an insurance brokerage is strongly preferred.

  • Understanding of insurance brokerage accounting, including direct bill, agency bill, insurer statements, and reconciliations.

  • Experience working with Applied Epic and the ability to generate reports is a significant asset.

  • Strong understanding of general bookkeeping, payroll, reconciliations, and year-end processes.

  • Familiarity with payroll requirements, CPP, employment standards, and related filings.

  • Experience working with multiple business entities and maintaining accurate financial records.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify discrepancies and recommend improvements.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently while maintaining positive working relationships with the broader team.

Schedule & Location

  • Based in Red Deer, Alberta.

  • Initial approximately one-month, full-time, in-office transition and training period.

  • Following training, the expected commitment is approximately 15 hours per week.

  • Ideally, a Red Deer-based candidate would work in the office approximately one day per week, with flexibility to complete remaining hours remotely.

  • Candidates located outside of Red Deer may also be considered, with potential flexibility around travel and accommodation arrangements during the initial training period.

Compensation & Additional Details

  • Approximately 15 hours per week following the initial transition period.

  • Potential for additional hours as the organization continues to grow.

  • Benefits may be available depending on the candidate's arrangement and eligibility.

  • Parking available at the Red Deer office.

Who Would Be a Good Fit?

This opportunity may appeal to an established bookkeeper looking to take on an additional account, an experienced accounting professional seeking part-time contract work, or someone approaching retirement who would like to remain professionally active with a flexible schedule.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take ownership of important financial processes, improve reporting and internal controls, and become a trusted resource to the organization.

If you have bookkeeping experience, ideally within the insurance industry, and are interested in a flexible contract opportunity, we would love to hear from you!

This is an opportunity to step into a senior leadership role with broad organizational influence. You will work closely with the CEO, support a diverse team, and help shape the operational and financial success of an organization serving Alberta's insurance community.

If you are a strategic, financially minded leader who enjoys building strong teams and driving operational improvements, we encourage you to apply.
