About us
Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand-owned, member-based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do -- delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive.
Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high-performing, values-driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do -- and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.
About the role
As we accelerate our shift to a cloud-first, Azure-based technology estate, we're looking for Azure Cloud Engineers to help maintain a resilient, cost-effective and continuously improving cloud infrastructure.
This role plays a key part in our insourcing strategy - strengthening internal capability and supporting future cloud initiatives.
Also hiring: Cloud & Infrastructure Engineer
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on Senior role where you’ll combine cloud engineering with design, technical ownership, and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Infrastructure Platforms Lead, you’ll design & implement scalable, secure & highly available cloud solutions, while ensuring our Azure infrastructure performs reliably & cost-effectively.
You’ll collaborate on new platform capabilities & infrastructure improvements, with a strong focus on automation, self-service & standardisation.
You’ll also take ownership of troubleshooting complex platform issues, root cause analysis & implementing sustainable fixes.
Beyond delivery, you’ll help shape engineering patterns, influence how our cloud platforms evolve & support the growth of other engineers across the team.
What you'll do
- Design, build & improve Azure cloud infrastructure
- Take cloud solutions from design through to delivery
- Build reusable Terraform/IaC modules, automation & deployment patterns
- Improve self-service & standardisation, reducing manual work
- Keep our platforms secure, resilient, reliable & cost-effective
- Troubleshoot complex issues, get to the root cause & put lasting fixes in place
- Help shape engineering standards & better ways of working
- Mentor other engineers & share your technical knowledge
What you'll bring
We’re looking for someone who has already built a strong career in hands-on cloud engineering, rather than someone looking to make their first move into cloud at Senior level.
You’ll ideally bring:
- Strong hands-on Azure cloud/infrastructure engineering experience
- Experience designing & delivering complex cloud infrastructure solutions
- Strong Terraform / IaC capability, including reusable modules
- Experience with Azure Landing Zones, ideally including design rather than solely operating within an established environment
- Automation, scripting & CI/CD experience
- Experience across cloud security, identity, governance, resilience & operational practices
- Experience working across Azure cloud & hybrid environments
- Strong troubleshooting, monitoring, incident & problem-management capability
- The ability to explain technical decisions & trade-offs clearly
- Experience influencing engineering practices & supporting adoption across teams
- A collaborative approach with experience mentoring or developing other engineers
Know a great Azure Engineer?
Yep, we’re hiring at that level too! So send them our way. We’d love to hear from them!
The key difference is that our Senior Engineer takes greater ownership of complex design & delivery, contributes to setting engineering standards, mentors others & helps teams adopt engineering patterns.
One team. Two levels. Plenty to get your hands on.
Why join us
We’re investing – in people, in technology, and in the mission. At a time when the market is hesitant, we’re continuing to strengthen our foundations and build our capabilities.
You’ll work closely with the Head of Technology Platforms, product and engineering leaders, and the wider Digital team, with real ownership over how the work grows.
We’re building something worth joining. Our teams are growing, our employer brand is gaining real traction, and the way we show up for our members and each other is being recognised. In 2026, Southern Cross placed 8th in the Kantar Corporate Reputation Index and 5th in New Zealand for Trust.
Who we are
Ngākau nui. Āhurutanga. Tikanga.
Join a proud, diverse team that's always there, always real, always true. If you thrive in a caring, honest and open culture, we think you'll love working with us.
We know our team's culture and wellbeing drive us forward. That's why we prioritise not only professional development but opportunities to thrive personally. We offer exceptional work/life balance, and our people are encouraged — and rewarded — for living well.
Southern Cross employee benefits include:
- Five days of wellbeing leave per year
- Health insurance for you and your immediate whānau
- Life insurance cover and discounts on pet and travel insurance
- Extra parental leave benefits and financial wellbeing support
- Participation in our workplace wellbeing programme
- The option to purchase flexi leave for study, volunteering, or supporting your whānau
- An annual volunteer day to contribute to a cause with your team
