POSITION SUMMARY
In keeping with the mission of the Newborn Screening Ontario Program, the Clinical Content Specialist works to ensure every newborn in Ontario receives high quality and timely screening and treatment for serious diseases. This position works within a multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive program of analysis, follow-up, education, research and development.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Referring screen positive infants to regional treatment centres/primary health care providers and ensuring they have been retrieved in a timely fashion, using clinical judgment to determine the urgency of referrals, maintaining a database of screen positive infants and their follow-up information, analysis and entry of follow-up information in conjunction with the Laboratory Head/Program Director/ Medical Advisor, completing documentation in the infant’s electronic chart
• Investigation of discrepant results, missed screens, false negatives, development of quality indicators.
• Tracking repeats on unsatisfactory newborn screening samples and keeping accurate documentation of the process, obtaining missing information on screen positive infants, communicating with parents, hospitals, midwives, and primary HCPs.
• Acts as clinical champion by advocating for improved health outcomes by coordinating and communicating clinical and/or technical system implementation plans to stakeholders to increase adoption, support high quality data and drive timely decision making
• Deep understanding of clinical user experience to inform the implementation of new clinical systems and/or technology
• Analyses how the introduction of new or enhanced testing or clinical systems and/or technology will impact on current clinical work processes and creates or updates workflow processes to reflect the expanded needs and mandate of the newborn screening program
• Obtaining and reviewing appropriate medical records or other relevant information, conducting the necessary review of literature and protocols
• Providing necessary ongoing support, education, and presentations to parents, the general public, primary health care providers, midwives, hospitals, and treatment centres; identify current sources of educational materials, support groups and other community resources
• Developing and editing educational materials for parents and health care providers, maintaining and creating content for the NSO website
• Managing individual projects that may be short or long term, identification of resources needed to complete projects, self- motivated work, meeting internal and external deadlines
• Liaising with the MOHLTC, MCCSS, colleagues, internal and external health care providers and other agencies to ensure continuity of care through the newborn screening process, assisting in policy development
• Participating in ongoing quality improvement activities to enhance the overall service of the Newborn Screening Program
• Participating in the ongoing educational and professional development activities of the Newborn Screening Program
• Initiating and participating in research and development to further the field of newborn screening
• Performing work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety
• Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

• Criminal Record Check (CRC) (Essential)
• Masters of Science in Genetic Counselling/Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing or other Professional Clinical designation (ie. Audiologist) (Essential)
• Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors Certification/Eligibility and/or American Board of Genetic Counsellors Certification/Eligibility and/or current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario where applicable (Essential)
• Three (3) years of related experience preferred (Essential)
• Bilingualism (English and French) (Preferred)
• Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements
• Experience in project management, education, communications (Preferred)
• Comprehensively use relevant computer technology (Essential)
• Perform basic statistical analysis (Essential)
• Take steps to ensure timely completion of tasks by adjusting priorities as required (Essential)
• Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing (Essential)
• Deal effectively with internal and external customers (Essential)
• Motivate self and work with tight deadlines (Essential)
• Incorporate working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety (Essential)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.  This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
 

Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
