Heartline Staffing is recruiting a Mechanical and Machining Engineer for an onsite engineering opportunity in Knoxville, Tennessee. This role is focused on developing in-house machining capability, precision ceramic machining, mechanical design, production and prototype tooling, fixturing, finish machining and manufacturing-process improvement.
The engineer will contribute to components serving critical functions in nuclear reactor applications, including technology already in commercial operation as well as components currently being designed, built and tested. This position provides the opportunity to contribute to new-product design and development while taking a lead role in production and prototype tooling and finish machining.

PRECISION & CERAMIC MACHINING
• Develop in-house machining capability and deliver high-quality precision parts to Quality
• Apply ceramic machining processes including wire EDM, diamond grinding and CNC milling
• Support machine setup, machining and troubleshooting activities
• Develop and improve manufacturing and machining methodologies and techniques
• Support production and prototype finish machining
TOOLING, FIXTURING & PROTOTYPING
• Design and machine production tooling and fixturing
• Produce finished-part prototypes
• Support tooling and machining solutions for new-product development
• Apply machine-shop manufacturing processes and setups to precision components
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING
• Analyze customer part drawings for Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
• Help ensure parts are optimized for manufacturing
• Apply mechanical design and machining knowledge to production challenges
• Support cost optimization and cost-reduction initiatives associated with machining processes
QUALITY & PRECISION
• Review quality concerns identified during piece-part inspections
• Develop solutions to machining and quality issues
• Apply GD&T and inspection procedures
• Work with precision metrology systems including CMMs and 3D imaging
MACHINE SHOP DEVELOPMENT & EQUIPMENT
• Identify and recommend machine-shop equipment
• Support equipment procurement and installation
• Ensure equipment is maintained and calibrated
• Operate CNCs, conventional lathes, mills and other machine-shop equipment used to manufacture high-precision parts
• Apply CNC programming to machining operations
COLLABORATION
• Collaborate with external machine-shop facilities to address capacity and scheduling needs
• Work with Quality and other internal stakeholders to resolve production and inspection concerns
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline REQUIRED
• 5+ years of mechanical design and machine-shop experience REQUIRED
• Ceramic machining experience, including wire EDM, diamond grinding and CNC milling REQUIRED
• Strong knowledge of standard machine-shop manufacturing processes and setups REQUIRED
• Expert proficiency in SolidWorks, MasterCAM and/or similar software programs REQUIRED
PREFERRED / ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
• Experience setting up and operating state-of-the-art machining equipment
• Experience operating CNCs, conventional lathes, mills and other machine-shop equipment used to manufacture high-precision parts
• Demonstrated proficiency in CNC programming
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and inspection procedures
• Experience with precision conventional and advanced metrology systems, including CMMs and 3D imaging
