What is the opportunity?
The Director in this role leads Operational Risk Management for Personal and Commercial Operations, designing and executing on enterprise-wide operational risk practices, from risk and controls frameworks to risk assessments to monitoring and mitigation strategies. As a first-line-of-defense leader, you’ll partner with the business to identify risks, implement resilient controls, and ensure compliance with RBC’s standards and procedures while enabling growth. This is a high impact role with significant visibility, where you’ll manage a team, provide strategic risk counsel to senior management and governance committees, and shape RBC’s ability to anticipate and manage operational risks effectively within Personal and Commercial Operations (PCO).
What will you do?
- Lead the implementation and sustainment of operational risk management practices within Personal & Commercial Operations, including the management of Risk Triage and Assessment (RTA) process, internal control, risk and control self-assessments and registers, and internal / external operational risk events
- Provide executive risk reporting and insights on their Operational Risk Profiles to Personal and Commercial Banking leaders and governance committees, identifying key operational risk exposures and assessing their impact on business objectives
- Provide guidance and manage key trigger events (e.g., project/initiative change risk assessments, external and internal events, etc.), assessing exposure impact on the business’ operational risk profile, evaluating process / control enhancements, and developing mitigation strategies and action plans as warranted
- Monitor control effectiveness, escalating material gaps and working with Risk Owners and stakeholders to recommend action plans
- Develop and maintain effective relationships and routines with first, second and third line of defense risk, governance, and control teams
- Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable Operational Risk policies, standards, and procedures
- Build and lead high-performing operational risk team; develop team expertise and career growth
What will you need to succeed?
Must-have:
- Strong understanding of operational risk management frameworks / practices and internal control principles
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams and cross-functional stakeholders
- In-depth knowledge of Personal and/or Commercial Banking operations and business models
- Excellent communication and documentation skills; ability to articulate complex risk concepts to diverse audiences
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative capabilities
- Ability to collaborate across teams and manage relationships with Risk Owners and stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, prioritize deliverables, and lead / execute complex programs
- Commitment to compliance and governance standards; attention to detail
- Prior experience in operational risk or risk management
Nice to have:
- Proficiency in Operational Risk Management Systems (ORMS) / Archer and/or Enterprise Issue Management (EIM) platform
- Background in first or second-line risk functions or internal audit
- Knowledge of RCSA and Risk Standard and/or ICMP/ICMS framework and control design
- Project management or change management experience
- Bachelor’s degree
