Job Summary
We are seeking an Engineer I to support gas distribution design, work order development, permitting, and field/construction activities for Nicor Gas.
This position is ideal for an early-career engineer with a background in civil engineering, utility design, gas distribution, or related infrastructure work. The role includes developing designs for pressure improvements, renewals, relocations, new business, meter/regulator sets, and other distribution system projects.
Key Responsibilities

Develop gas distribution designs for:

Department of Transportation projects

Pressure improvement projects

Develop and size meter and regulator set designs, including overpressure protection.

Collect and evaluate records for use in gas system uprating procedures.

Develop design options and recommendations to improve distribution system performance.

Prepare work order designs, including drafting and application of company specifications.

Investigate land rights and support easement/right-of-way related design requirements.
-
Ensure designs comply with applicable federal codes, standards, and company requirements.

Provide engineering support to field operations and construction teams.

Manage assigned design projects and track:

Other project milestones

Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and project stakeholders.

Travel to project and construction sites as needed.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.
-
0–2 years of experience in civil engineering, utility design, gas distribution, or a related field.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to manage multiple design assignments and project priorities.
-
Ability to work effectively with engineering, field, construction, and permitting teams.

Must be punctual, dependable, and available to support project needs.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Experience with utility or gas distribution design.

Familiarity with permitting, land rights, work order design, or construction support.
