Summary:

Facilitates the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures.

Responsibilities:

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned which may include, but not limited to, patient transportation and assisting in the Sterile Processing Department.Handles turnover of operating room in a timely manner to include tearing down case, and disposing of sharp and contaminated items in accordance with policy.Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis (under the supervision of RN) and helps apply dressings.Applies basic knowledge in surgical procedures.Assists in pre-operative procedures such as assembly, selection of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment and preparing for next cases. Applies basic knowledge to reading preference cards to assist with surgical case preparation.Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and microbiology.Establishes and maintains a sterile field for use during a surgical procedure.Assists with gowning, gloving and draping. Passes instruments, and performs counts according to hospital policy.

Additional Job Information:

Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Required Work Experience: No prior work experience required. Other Information: Certified Surgical Technologist certification (CST or TS-C) is preferred.Additional Education Info: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program within the last 12 months preferred.Additional Information for Apprenticeship Program in the Operating Room: Less than 6 months of surgical technologist work experience preferred.
