Job Description:
We believe in bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and the drive to transform knowledge into impact. Here, your curiosity fuels progress, your voice shapes innovation, and your ambition helps redefine what’s possible within science and learning. We are a culture that obsesses over impact, challenges, and drives what’s next to power infinite possibilities for our customers, colleagues and society at large.
About the Role:
Wiley is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our engineering team in Amman, working on the platform behind many of the world's largest scientific publishers.
You will work primarily on the administrative applications that publishers and internal teams use to configure and manage their sites, and across the wider backend platform that powers them. This is a mature, multi-tenant Java system serving hundreds of publishers with different configurations and requirements, so the work spans backend services, data, and the interfaces built on top of them.
How You Will Make an Impact:
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and the features built on top of them.
- Modernize established modules onto a current frontend architecture while preserving the behavior customers depend on.
- Own features end to end, from data model and API design through to the interface.
- Contribute to architectural discussions, technical design reviews, and code reviews.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development, testing, and production environments, driving them to root cause.
- Improve software quality through automated testing, refactoring, and management of technical debt.
- Collaborate with engineers, product management, and QA across multiple regions and time zones.
What We Look For:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of professional experience developing applications in Java, with a strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, and software design patterns.
- Hands-on experience with the Spring framework.
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and backend services.
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.
- Experience writing unit and integration tests using frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
- Hands-on experience with Git and Linux-based environments.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in established codebases with limited documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on quality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a distributed team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience building user interfaces with React.
- Experience with XML technologies such as XSLT and XQuery, or with template engines.
- Experience with server-side Java UI frameworks, or with servlet and JSP based applications.
- Experience migrating a legacy web application to a modern JavaScript framework.
- Experience with multi-tenant systems where behavior is driven by per-customer configuration.
- Experience with messaging or event-driven architectures such as JMS or Kafka.
- Experience with NoSQL databases such as Cassandra.
