Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national organization with 350,000 members and supporters organized into over 400 chapters and councils nationwide. These dedicated grassroots volunteers are matched by a respected staff of organizers, lawyers, policy experts, restoration specialists, project managers, and scientists, who work out of more than 20 offices across the country.  Our mission is to bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams, so our children can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon.


Position Summary

TU seeks to hire a self-motivated and highly capable person to implement restoration projects to benefit aquatic resources and native and wild fish populations in Upper Columbia Basin watersheds in Washington State. The project manager will be responsible for working cooperatively with partners to develop new and carry-forth ongoing restoration projects including efforts to advance a possible Enloe Dam removal project. The position requires an individual who is self-motivated, well organized, action oriented and capable of working well with a team with diverse backgrounds.


Competitive candidates for this position will need to demonstrate advanced project management skills and technical abilities related to river restoration, hydrology, ecology, and partnership-building. The successful applicant manages key projects and works with TU staff and stakeholders to secure additional funding for project activities, conceptualize and develop new projects, and functions as part of the team assisting other staff as necessary. 


The Project Manager will be expected to manage projects from conception to completion and be a leader in working on project-oriented habitat restoration and conservation. This position may require travel, intermittent field work, and may be based out of TU’s Twisp or Wenatchee offices.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct TU’s coordination of the Enloe Dam Removal Project.
  • Develop, design, coordinate, and implement protection and restoration projects resulting in fisheries habitat restoration and/or enhancement of instream flow to benefit aquatic species and overall ecological function in priority watersheds.
  • Lead project-based teams of fund development professionals internally and externally with partner organizations.
  • Coordinate large teams of staff, contractors, government agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Identify funding sources, prepare grant proposals, and secure funding for instream.
  • flow and habitat restoration projects.
  • Develop scopes-of-work, budgets, and contracting documents in compliance with state and federal contract requirements and procurement rules. Oversee and participate in the development of agreements, restoration plans, mitigation plans and engineering documentation to advance restoration project implementation.
  • Work with company accounting, legal, management, and human resources staff.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with landowners, tribes, state and federal agencies and other stakeholders with varying political and social backgrounds.
  • Attend, participate, and represent TU in meetings relevant to TU’s mission.

Requirements


  • A minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience and a master’s or other advanced degree
  • Experience leading teams of developers raising funds for non-profit organizations and projects.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively with a wide range of partners and organizations.
  • Highly developed grant and technical writing skills.
  • Capable of simultaneously managing multiple complex projects with multiple funding agreements and stakeholder groups.
  • Experience with project development, implementation and management including construction projects that involve development, partner coordination, securing funds and managing budgets, contractor selection and oversight, and reporting.
  • Experience with riverine restoration techniques, project management fundamentals, construction management basics, irrigated agriculture, and complex multi-party negotiations.
  • Functional knowledge of conservation, riverine ecology, fisheries biology, hydrology, and watershed processes.
  • Nuanced understanding of how to enable local knowledge to help shape projects and how to work respectfully in partnership with local leaders and rural communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as research and analytic skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience indicating ability to prioritize workload, to be highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and meeting facilitation. 
  • Have a passion for fisheries conservation and for protecting and restoring rivers and streams
  • Experience using MS Office suite, especially Work, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Ability to periodically travel overnight. 
  • Hold a valid drivers license.

Salary and Benefits


Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family-friendly atmosphere. This is a full-time, year-round position with a generous benefits package. The anticipated salary range is $77,000 to 89,000 plus a full benefit package including 403(b) retirement match. Salary levels may be adjusted for exceptional candidates. Title and compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience level, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
