Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Lab Delivery and Instructional Support:
- Instructs students and demonstrates the practical use of biology experiments, exercises, or techniques in labs and on field trips.
- Introduces students to lab content and reinforces content taught in lecture using theoretical and practical instruction.
- Trains and instructs students to operate technical laboratory equipment, handle chemicals, and treat specimens. Provides assistance and fields questions related to theory or interpretation of lab results, where required, to students carrying out practical exercises.
- Demonstrates and reinforces safety protocols that are appropriate for the procedure used. Maintains safety of others in a lab environment.
- Maintains office hours and scheduled appointments with students outside of lab hours.
- Compares student work to prescribed learning outcomes in labs.
- Maintains student conduct in labs.
- Coordinates with Accessibility Services to ensure designated accommodations are met, if required.
2. Materials preparation and Lab set-up:
Materials and content
- Writes and modifies lab manuals, in collaboration with faculty.
- Designs assessments such as lab exams, lab reports, lab assignments, etc. in collaboration with faculty.
- Creates lab supplementary materials.
- Sets up lab materials on educational platforms (e.g. Brightspace).
Lab Set-up and Maintenance
- Setup lab rooms according to prep list.
- Prepares and maintains detailed prep lists of materials required to set up the labs
- Moves, maintains, and sterilizes technical equipment as needed (e.g., microscopes, models, hot plates, centrifuges, hot water baths, incubators, etc.).
- Maintains cultures and live specimens (e.g., plants, protists, bacteria, fungi, and invertebrates). Collects specimens for use in the laboratory.
- Prepares chemicals/biohazardous materials and ensures safe disposal after use or spills.
3. Student Assessments:
- Set-ups exams in the laboratory.
- Invigilates and marks lab assessments (e.g., exams, assignments, lab reports, oral presentations, etc.).
- Supervises long-term projects and experiments during and outside lab time.
- Communicates results of lab assessments or post assessment reviews in a timely and confidential manner, in person, by email or video conference.
- Maintains academic integrity in lab assessments.
- Maintains and stores records of grades.
4. Administrative and Purchasing:
- Orders and ensures timely arrival of appropriate equipment, models, specimens, and chemicals required for labs.
- Orders office supplies for the biology department through college contract systems.
- Procures transportation and accommodation for field trips.
- Contacts possible vendors to evaluate stock and obtain quotes before sending to purchasing.
- Coordinates delivery with local vendors for specimens and tanks (e.g., live aquarium specimen in tanks and rat/quail specimen for dissections) .
- Collaborates and participates in team meetings. Liaises with other groups on and off campus to facilitate resources and relevant supports.
5. Performs other related duties and/or ad hoc projects, as required.
Qualifications Required:
Education & Experience
- Completion of a Bachelors of Science (Biology) or relevant discipline where a majority of course work is in biology (e.g. biochemistry, plant biology, ecology, etc.).
- Two (2) years of relevant experience as a lab demonstrator, teaching assistant or acceptable equivalent, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Considerable knowledge of the course content, procedures, techniques and methodologies involved in biological laboratory environment.
- Must have a working knowledge of Worksafe and WHMIS regulations.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, instructors, staff and students.
- Ability to advise and direct laboratory aides and student employees.
- Ability to demonstrate the use of different equipment and techniques to students.
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply department rules, policies and technical materials.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to effectively supervise, direct and lead others.
- Ability to respond and manage potentially dangerous, hazardous, or emergency situations.
- Ability to exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility.
- Familiarity with office applications such as MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
