About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH) at the University of Sydney is the largest faculty, encompassing the Sydney Medical School (SMS), Sydney Dental School, Sydney School of Health Sciences, Sydney School of Nursing and Midwifery, Sydney School of Medical Sciences and Sydney School of Public Health. Our faculty takes pride in fostering a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to address contemporary healthcare challenges.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as the Raymond E Purves Chair of Dermatology (Professor/Level E) in teaching and research. Depending on the candidate the role may be appointed in the School of Medical Sciences, the Sydney Medical School or the School of Public Health. This position is suited to an ambitious person with a passion for building a program of work in dermatology. The Chair will grow an internationally outstanding research program which will complement and leverage the research activities in the school and faculty.

We are looking for a leader who can foster collaborations across academic, clinical, industry, and professional networks. The Chair must have a disciplined approach to research, balancing the delivery of high-quality outcomes with mentoring and supporting the career development of students and academic staff. The Chair will report to the relevant Head of School.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

We are seeking a candidate with the vision, expertise, and leadership to make a lasting impact in dermatology. Applicants who hold, or are eligible for, registration as a Dermatologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will:

  • hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and an international reputation for outstanding scholarship and research

  • demonstrate experience in people leadership and management of a research team within the higher education sector

  • have experience supervising and mentoring of higher degree by research students to completion

  • have an outstanding track record in obtaining grant funding and an exceptional publication record with original contributions in the field of dermatology

  • have experience in educational design and delivery, including recognition for achieving improved or consistently excellent student outcomes, educational innovation or educational leadership

  • have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability and experience in working cooperatively and collegially in inclusive decision-making environments.

  • hold, or be eligible for, registration as a Dermatologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) (desirable).

Sponsorship / work rights for Australia

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will be provided if required.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed term (0.6FTE to 1.0FTE) position with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding. The appointment is subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
