POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics to begin August 2027. The candidate should have a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field. A Ph.D. is preferred, but candidates with a Master’s degree and relevant professional or teaching experience are encouraged to apply.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise or experience in mathematics education and a strong commitment to preparing future teachers. The successful candidate will contribute broadly to the Mathematics program while playing a significant role in courses and programs that support elementary, middle-level, and secondary mathematics educators.

The beautiful campus of Benedictine College is situated in picturesque Atchison, KS on the bluffs above the Missouri River. Atchison is within an hour drive of major cities such as Kansas City, Saint Joseph, Lawrence, and Topeka as well as 40 minutes from the Kansas City International Airport. Benedictine College has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2200 students and is a mission-centered academic community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The primary responsibility of the position is undergraduate teaching in Mathematics. A typical teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester, generally consisting of three to four courses. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses across the Mathematics curriculum according to their background and departmental needs, with particular responsibility for courses supporting students preparing to become teachers. These are expected to include elementary math content courses: MATH-1110 Mathematics for Elem Teachers I and MATH-1120 Mathematics for Elem Teachers II. They will also include courses supporting the Mathematics and Secondary Education program such as MATH-1130 Math for Middle School Teachers and a methods course: MATH-4457 Secondary School Math Curr & Materials. The successful candidate will typically also teach other mathematics courses, which may include MATH-1220 Intro Stats.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty in Mathematics and the School of Education to support and strengthen mathematics teacher preparation. Responsibilities will include helping ensure that the mathematics education curriculum remains aligned with applicable Kansas educator preparation and licensure standards, maintaining appropriate documentation and curricular alignment, and participating as needed in program review and assessment.

Preference will be given to candidates committed to excellent undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts environment and to effective preparation of future mathematics teachers. The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain appropriate scholarly or professional activity. All mathematics and mathematics education majors perform research toward the end of their program, and the successful candidate will regularly mentor a few of those students each year.

Education

A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field, or a Master’s degree in such a field with ample college-level teaching experience.

Experience
 Preference may be given to candidates with relevant college-level teaching experience, experience in mathematics teacher preparation, and/or demonstrated potential. Preference may be given to those qualified applicants who also have K-12 teaching experience.
