Job Description:

Tunnel Engineer (TBM Survey Engineer)

Dubai, UAE

Parsons is looking for an experienced and talented Tunnel Engineer (TBM Survey Engineer) to join our construction supervision team! In this role, you will assist the Resident Engineer - Tunnels in supervising and reviewing survey works related to TBM tunnel construction works, ensuring compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and project timelines

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Prepare daily/weekly survey reports, including trend analysis of alignment deviations, and contribute to risk registers or non-conformance reports.

  • Assist in monitoring TBM tunneling operations, including alignment checks, surface monitoring(settlement/heave).

  • Support surveys work in terms of traverse calculations review, implementation of tunnel Center Point at stations, reviewing tunnel virtual axis calculation and checking TBM alignment to remain within allowable tolerances.

  • Establish and maintain primary and secondary control networks inside the tunnel, including transfer of surface control points through shafts.

  • Awareness of TBM survey software for ring installation vertical/horizontal curves.

  • Calculation review for TBM guidance data, including laser target extension and alignment inputs within the tunnel till the TBM.

  • Review and assist in checking TBM roll, pitch, and yaw, and report deviations to senior engineers.

  • Participate in breakthrough preparations, including precise alignment surveys and coordination with the receiving shaft team.

  • Help conduct 3D measurements for tunnel alignment before/after breakthroughs and during TBM break-In and break‑Out as well as the Annexes locations.

  • Assist in wriggle surveys and as‑built surveys, ensuring accurate data collection and documentation.

  • Support identification of critical zones requiring special rings based on survey information.

  • Assist in reviewing setting‑out points for NATM tunnel connections and annex interfaces.

  • Support 3D survey checks for moulds and precast segments during production.

  • Assist in reviewing shop drawings, method statements, and survey‑related documents under the direction of the Tunnel Engineer.

  • Provide on‑site technical support to ensure compliance with quality and safety requirements.

  • Coordinate with surveyors, inspectors, and contractor teams to resolve minor survey‑related issues.

  • Maintain daily survey logs, alignment records, and progress documentation.

  • Support preparation of as‑built documentation and ensure accuracy of survey data.

  • Assist in preparing weekly/monthly progress inputs related to survey and TBM alignment.

  • Review the validity for calibration and maintenance documents of survey equipment, including total stations, prisms, targets, and TBM-integrated sensors.

  • Collaborate with the instrumentation and monitoring team to integrate survey data with geotechnical readings for holistic tunnel performance assessment.

  • Ensure all survey activities comply with project specifications, international standards (e.g., ITA guidelines), and local regulatory requirements.

  • Support emergency response surveys in case of unexpected ground movements or machine stoppages.

  • Follow RTA safety procedures and promote safe work practices in tunneling environment.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Geomatics, or Structural Engineering from an accredited university is required.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in TBM tunnel construction, surveying, or infrastructure projects (metro experience preferred).

  • Basic understanding of TBM operations, tunneling sequences, and underground construction methods.

  • Familiarity with survey software & instruments (total station, laser guidance, 3D scanners) and basic tunnel alignment principles.

  • Ability to assist in reviewing traverse, alignment calculations, 3D measurements, and setting‑out points.

  • Basic knowledge of tunneling elements, (steel ribs, shotcrete, precast segments, mobile scaffold).

  • Ability to read engineering drawings and follow method statements.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and basic engineering/survey software.

  • UAE/GCC experience in consultancy or construction is an advantage.

  • Experience supporting survey works in metro, TBM, or NATM projects.

  • Ability to identify minor construction or alignment issues and escalate them appropriately.

  • Strong coordination skills for working with engineers, surveyors, and contractors.
