Description
Senior Civil Design Engineer
Project Engineer - Site Development
Location: Monmouth County, Bergen County, or Ocean County, New Jersey
Job Type: Full-Time
Experience: 2-5 yrs
Are you ready to move beyond simply completing redlines and start taking real ownership of project design?
Our client, an established multidisciplinary consulting firm, is seeking a Project Engineer to join its growing land development practice. The position may be based in one of three New Jersey offices, providing flexibility for professionals located in North Jersey, Central Jersey, or along the southern Jersey Shore.
This opportunity sits in the sweet spot between Design Engineer and Project Manager. You will remain actively involved in technical design while taking on greater responsibility for project coordination, quality control, mentoring, and execution.
You will work alongside experienced Project Managers and firm leadership on a diverse collection of residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and mixed-use projects throughout New Jersey.
If you enjoy solving complicated land development problems, understand that permitting in New Jersey is occasionally an endurance sport, and want a clearer path toward project management, this could be a strong next step.
The Opportunity
As a Project Engineer, you will help lead the technical design and execution of land development projects from the early planning stages through permitting and construction.
This is not a position where you will spend the next five years quietly moving contours around a screen while someone else receives all the client exposure. You will be trusted with meaningful responsibility, work directly with senior professionals, mentor younger staff, and gain broader involvement in the complete project lifecycle.
Responsibilities will include:
-
Leading the technical design of residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and mixed-use land development projects
-
Preparing and overseeing designs involving grading, drainage, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, utilities, roadways, and other site infrastructure
-
Developing and reviewing engineering plans, calculations, specifications, cost estimates, and construction documents using Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD
-
Coordinating project design with clients, architects, attorneys, planners, surveyors, landscape architects, environmental professionals, contractors, and other consultants
-
Preparing technical reports, engineering analyses, permit applications, and supporting documentation for municipal, county, and state approvals
-
Researching and interpreting zoning ordinances, land development regulations, design standards, and permitting requirements
-
Coordinating with municipal engineers, planning and zoning boards, utility authorities, county agencies, and state regulatory agencies
-
Conducting site visits, field investigations, construction observations, and project meetings as needed
-
Providing technical oversight and quality control throughout each phase of project development
-
Reviewing the work of junior engineers and designers while providing practical technical guidance and mentorship
-
Assisting Project Managers with project scheduling, budgeting, workload planning, consultant coordination, and client communication
-
Identifying design or permitting challenges early and helping develop practical, cost-effective solutions
-
Managing multiple projects and competing priorities without allowing quality or deadlines to quietly wander off into the woods
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will have:
-
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university
-
At least five years of civil engineering experience with a strong emphasis on land development and site design
-
A Professional Engineer license or active progress toward obtaining licensure in the near future
-
Strong proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD
-
Experience designing grading, drainage, stormwater management, erosion control, utilities, roadways, and related site improvements
-
A thorough understanding of New Jersey land development, zoning, permitting, and regulatory requirements
-
Experience preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, construction documents, cost estimates, and permit applications
-
The ability to review technical work and provide direction to junior engineers and design staff
-
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
-
The ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines
-
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
-
A collaborative approach and a genuine commitment to responsive client service
