Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:        

Residential Support Worker contributes to a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for individuals accessing services at the Halifax Centre of Hope. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the incumbent provides resident support, promotes safety and well-being, and assists with the daily operation of the Emergency Men’s Shelter program in alignment with The Salvation Army's Mission, Vision, Values, and policies.

 

Key Accountabilities:  

• Provide trauma-informed, person-centered support that promotes safety, dignity, choice, empowerment, and housing stability. 
• Support residents with admissions, daily living needs, medication distribution, mail, meal services, and referrals to community resources. 
• Build positive relationships with residents, staff, and community partners to support resident goals and well-being. 
• Maintain a safe, secure, and respectful environment by monitoring building access, conducting security checks, and responding to emergencies, crises, conflicts, and behavioral concerns. 
• Operate security, communication, and emergency response systems in accordance with organizational policies and fire safety procedures. 
• Complete accurate, timely, and confidential documentation, reports, statistics, shift communications, and other administrative records. 
• Respond to inquiries of services and donations, and maintain operational documentation as required. 
• Assist with facility operations by maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming spaces, reporting maintenance concerns, and supporting the receipt, storage, and distribution of supplies and donations. 
• Maintain workspaces, equipment, and supplies in an organized and operational condition. 
• Participate in team meetings, training, committees, quality improvement initiatives, and other duties assigned.

Working Conditions:

• EMERGENCY MEN’s Shelter.   
• Working environment is typically in the corps building in generally agreeable conditional and some outdoor duties.
• Some work over weekends and evenings may be requiredAbility to lift up to 30 lbs.May deal with upset people or challenging behaviors 

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

•  Diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Services, Community Support, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
• Current NVCI, ASIST, Standard First Aid, and medication administration training are assets; successful candidates may be required to obtain and maintain these certifications within six months of hire. 
• Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion. 

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:  

• One to three years of experience in supportive housing, homelessness services, shelter services, mental health, addictions, or a related community-based setting preferred. Knowledge of homelessness, supportive housing, mental health, substance use, harm reduction, crisis intervention, and community resources.
•  Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.

• Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, documentation, and organizational skills.
•  Ability to build respectful, professional relationships with individuals experiencing complex life circumstances.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, professional boundaries, equity, diversity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practice. 

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.30 to $22.87 with a maximum of $27.44.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
