In this position...

Controls Research Engineer – Develop control systems for gasoline and hybrid powertrains and sub-systems, including Air, Fuel, Spark, EGR and aftertreatment. Employ advanced control methods (examples: Model Predictive Control, Adaptive Control, Optimal Control) and signal processing techniques for new powertrain technologies and to improve existing control system performance and robustness. Develop models and simulations to support system characterization, control design, implementation and validation. Develop engine diagnostics for OBD regulation. Collect and analyze experimental engine and vehicle data. Design experiments to support validation of engine control systems. Provide input for engine and vehicle instrumentation. Implement algorithms into embedded controller code C language. Leverage software version control in clearcase, Git Hub.

What you'll do...

  • Perform vehicle and dynamometer based testing to collect required data
  • Develop Vehicle and gasoline engine test plans
  • Perform data analysis
  • Develop requirements
  • Perform system engineering analysis including identification of critical Nosie factors
  • Design and execute test plans to evaluate controller robustness to noise factors
  • Design control systems design to meet requirements
  • Leverage existing models or develop new models to establish system behavior and physics
  • Implement control system into embedded "C" software
  • Work with HIL/SIL/MIL teams to test software and design ability to meet requirements.
  • Perform version control of software releases in clear case and or GitHub
  • Design and set up experimental control systems for example D-Space, ATI "no-hooks", micro autobox, speedgoat
  • Specify instrumentation for experimental vehicle and dynamometer test set ups
  • Develop tools and documentation to aid calibration of new control system designs
  • Leverage artificial intelligence to help achieve efficiency in designs and how work is performed
  • Presentations to senior management and subject matter experts articulating designs and performance to requirements

You'll have...

  • Requires a master’s or foreign equivalent degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related engineering field.
  • 3 years of experience performing control design and modeling for mechanical or electrical systems (in lieu of a master’s degree, will accept a BS . in aforementioned fields and 5 years of experience as stated or PhD and 1 year of experience in aforementioned fields).
  • 3 years of experience performing control development and systems analysis with Matlab and Simulink (in lieu of a master’s degree, will accept a BS 5 years of experience or Ph.D. and 1 year of experience as stated).
  • 3 years of experience performing data analysis for mechanical or electrical systems (in lieu of a master’s degree, will accept a BS 5 years of experience or Ph.D. and 1 year of experience as stated).
  • 1 year of experience designing controls for and testing internal combustion engines and emissions (in lieu of a master’s degree, will accept a Ph.D. with related coursework and research projects).
  • 1 year of experience applying advanced signal processing techniques (in lieu of a master’s degree, will accept a BS and 3 years of experience or Ph.D. with related coursework and research projects).
  • 1 year of experience working with hybrid powertrain or related coursework
  • Experience working in cross functional teams
  • Experience presenting to stakeholders and management
  • Experience with HIL / SIL methods
  • Experience with engine calibration tools and rapid prototyping systems
  • Working knowledge of “C” programming language and ability to code in “C” in embedded controllers.
  • Experience may be, but need not be, acquired concurrently
  • Experience leveraging AI methods for controls design and or software coding is a bonus.

This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $99,600-$166,600., This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $115,000-$192,900.

Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
