Job Description Summary:

Unit Mission Statement:
The primary purpose of the William & Mary Police Department is to support the greater university community in their core pursuits of teaching, research and public service.

It is imperative that we provide police, public safety, emergency communications, and emergency management services in a manner that not only keeps people safe but also ensures that people feel safe in their environment.

It is our job to enhance the W&M student experience; facilitate faculty and staff efforts; and to partner with all W&M community members to solve problems, prevent crime, foster personal safety, protect property, maintain order for the normal operation of the University, and effectively address criminal activity.

Position Summary:
Monitor Muscarelle Museum and grounds to ensure staff, students, visitors and artworks are safe.
Perform and follow opening and closing policy and procedures as required.
Make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis.
Follows protocols for incident reporting as needed.
Ensures all doors and windows are properly secured, and all building conditions are normal including accessible emergency egress.
Reports building concerns to Museum administration and Facilities Management.
Conducts daily performance and facility logs in the absence of the Director of Security and communicates security concerns to Museum administration.
Supervises front line security operations in the absence of the Director of Security.
In tandem with Museum staff, helps to oversee vendors, contractors and equipment set-up and break-down as needed for, but not limited to, deliveries, catering, facility upkeep and special events.
Reports facilities-related and unsafe campus conditions (including adverse weather) to supervisor and appropriate personnel and communicates recommended action to those departments.
Reports all crimes in progress as well as suspicious/unruly individuals to William & Mary Police and notifies Museum staff as needed.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to learn various software and emergency response systems.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to work with staff at all levels.
  • Must have excellent public contact skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment under stress.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous security, military, law enforcement, public safety, and/or museum experience.
  • Experience working in higher education or academic/research environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the operations of a university or cultural institutions encompassing museums, historical properties and collections.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • The person in this position will work under direct supervision.
  • Routine tasks will be completed without direct supervision.
  • Activities will be monitored by the direct supervisor and Museum administration.
  • The person in this position will seek guidance for all activities that are beyond the normal activities. This position includes nights, weekends, and occasional holiday shifts.
  • Must meet the physical conditions of the job.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
  • This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.
  • This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.

Job Duties:

70% - Muscarelle Security:

  • Provide continual patrol of museum building to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, students, visitors and property including art and cultural assets.
  • Enforce museum rules and regulations with visitors.
  • Monitors and maintains crowd control and flow of exiting guests of the museum and special events.
  • Ensure all doors and windows are properly secured, and all building conditions are normal during operating hours and for opening/closing procedures.
  • Look for safety hazards and suspicious incidents or people and reports building concerns to Museum administration and Facilities Management.
  • Responds to requests to unlock doors, accompany staff to their vehicles and investigate problems.
  • Respond to fire alarms and reset alarm equipment as needed.
  • Prepare and submit written reports and/or daily logs for their shift.


25% - Grounds Patrol:

  • Provide frequent patrol of museum grounds to ensure the safety of campus.
  • Look for safety hazards and suspicious incidents or people and report to William & Mary Police.
  • Assist with medical calls as needed.

5% - Other Duties:

  • Other duties/projects as assigned and may include providing security escorts for William & Mary community and special guests as requested.

Pay: Up to $20 an hour commensurate with experience and internal alignment.
