Maintain and support the hotel’s building systems, equipment, guest rooms, public areas, and physical facilities to ensure a safe, functional, well maintained, and welcoming environment for guests and associates.At Marriott La Jolla, Engineer II team members are expected to independently respond to routine maintenance needs, troubleshoot building and equipment concerns within their knowledge and training, complete preventive maintenance assignments, and respond to guest and operational requests with professionalism and urgency.
This position works collaboratively with Engineering leadership and hotel departments to support property operations while maintaining applicable safety standards, company procedures, and Marriott La Jolla service expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are specific contributions that must be developed during the training program in order to successfully complete the program and be placed in a hotel with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Perform preventive maintenance assignments on a scheduled basis, including guest room preventive maintenance and room care programs.
• Respond to assigned work orders and maintenance requests throughout guest rooms, public areas, back of house areas, meeting spaces, food and beverage outlets, and other areas of the hotel.
• Troubleshoot and perform routine repairs involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, fixtures, appliances, and other building systems within the scope of the position and the employee’s training and qualifications.
• Inspect and make minor repairs or replacements to electrical and building systems, including air conditioning controls, lighting systems, televisions, outlets, switches, and related equipment.
• Check and perform routine repairs on hotel equipment, including kitchen equipment, laundry equipment, boilers, pool equipment, HVAC systems, hand and power tools, plumbing systems, pipelines, toilets, sinks, and fixtures.
• Identify maintenance concerns requiring additional technical expertise or leadership involvement and communicate or escalate those concerns promptly.
• Complete assigned work independently while maintaining communication with Engineering leadership regarding work status, unresolved conditions, parts needed, safety concerns, and additional follow up.
• Respond promptly to guest room maintenance calls and interact directly with guests in a courteous, professional, and service focused manner.
• Take appropriate ownership of guest concerns within the scope of the position and communicate unresolved issues to the appropriate leader or department.
• Support room readiness by responding with urgency to maintenance concerns affecting guest rooms, arrivals, out of order rooms, and other operational priorities.
• Coordinate effectively with Housekeeping, Front Office, Food and Beverage, Security, and other hotel departments regarding maintenance needs and operational priorities.
• Complete assigned preventive maintenance, inspections, work orders, maintenance logs, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
• Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, Engineering spaces, and assigned storage areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
• Refurbish and repair furniture and fixtures within guest rooms and hotel areas, including cabinets, tables, chairs, doors, windows, counters, and related items. Paint and finish furniture and fixtures as needed.
• Assist with the maintenance of the hotel exterior and overall property appearance as assigned.
• Service pool equipment and systems as assigned, including appropriate testing, adjustment, maintenance, cleaning, and documentation when properly trained and authorized.
• Follow applicable safety procedures when operating tools, machinery, equipment, or working in areas involving electrical, mechanical, chemical, temperature, height, or other workplace hazards.
• Maintain awareness of conditions that could affect guest or associate safety and promptly report or address concerns within the scope of the position.
• Support energy conservation efforts by identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary energy consumption while maintaining guest comfort and operational standards.
• Demonstrate professionalism, urgency, sound judgment, and attention to detail when responding to maintenance and operational needs.
• Comply with attendance expectations and maintain schedule flexibility based on operational needs, including weekends, holidays, AM shifts, PM shifts, overnight shifts, and varied schedules.

Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience
• Vocational schooling, military training, certification, and/or experience in building related trades required in one or more of the following areas: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry.
• Previous experience performing general building maintenance, facilities maintenance, or related skilled trade work required.
• Hotel experience preferred.
• Experience independently troubleshooting and completing routine maintenance and repair assignments preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Working knowledge of one or more building related trades, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or general building maintenance.
• Ability to independently evaluate and complete routine maintenance assignments within the employee’s demonstrated knowledge, training, and qualifications.
• Ability to troubleshoot common building, equipment, guest room, and facility maintenance concerns and determine when additional assistance or escalation is necessary.
• Ability to safely use appropriate hand tools, power tools, equipment, and machinery required for assigned work.
• Ability to understand and follow preventive maintenance schedules, work orders, equipment instructions, safety procedures, and departmental standards.
• Ability to prioritize multiple work requests based on guest impact, safety, operational urgency, and direction from Engineering leadership.
• Ability to receive instructions and effectively communicate the progress and status of work assignments.
• Ability to communicate professionally with guests and explain maintenance activity in an appropriate and service focused manner.
• Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, coworkers, hotel departments, vendors, and the public.
• Ability to climb, read, stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and routinely lift 25 to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to work in environments involving varying temperatures and operate machinery and equipment required for assigned duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
