Department: Patient Transport
Position Overview
ChristianaCare is seeking a skilled and customer-focused Patient Transport Trainer III to support safe, efficient patient transportation services throughout the hospital. In addition to transporting patients and delivering equipment and essential items, this role serves as a subject matter expert and trainer for new and existing team members. The Patient Transport Trainer plays a key role in ensuring adherence to department protocols, safety standards, customer service expectations, and patient care excellence.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Transport & Support Services
- Transport patients safely and efficiently via stretcher, wheelchair, bed, and specialty transport equipment.
- Assist clinical staff with transferring patients to and from transport vehicles and equipment.
- Provide equipment and support services necessary to meet patient transport needs.
- Perform pickup and delivery of clinical equipment, medications, specimens, paperwork, and related materials.
- Support dispatch operations as needed.
- Assist in the care, maintenance, cleaning, and disinfection of departmental equipment.
- Perform Service Assistant I, II, and III duties as assigned.
Training & Education
- Train new employees on:
- Patient transport procedures
- Safe operation of transport equipment
- Equipment cleaning and disinfection
- Patient transfer techniques
- Customer service standards
- Communication and patient handoff procedures
- Train team members on specialty and auxiliary functions, including:
- Oxygen rounding
- Clinical and specimen rounding
- Physical Therapy Gym transports
- Labor & Delivery transports
- Procedure-related transports
- Evaluate new employees using department training checklists and competency standards.
- Provide constructive feedback and communicate performance concerns to supervisors and training specialists in a timely manner.
- Assist leadership with the development and revision of training materials and educational resources.
- Lead or assist with departmental training sessions, workshops, skills stations, and employee development initiatives.
- Serve as a departmental subject matter expert on policies, procedures, and best practices.
Safety & Compliance
- Perform all duties in accordance with departmental safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, or policy violations promptly.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive information.
- Participate in required educational programs, departmental meetings, and in-service training.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of customer service experience required.
- Healthcare, patient transport, training, or hospital support service experience preferred.
- Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of hospital departments and locations.
- Strong verbal communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and write at a high school level.
- Ability to train, coach, and evaluate employees effectively.
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
- Ability to operate department vehicles, including golf carts and Segways, after training.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, online learning platforms, and timekeeping systems.
- Ability to utilize smartphones and mobile applications for work assignments.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with patients, families, physicians, and caregivers.
- Ability to maintain a courteous, service-oriented attitude throughout the workday.
- Ability to safely transport patients using various transport vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with privacy requirements.
- Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Commitment to personal hygiene, professionalism, and patient-centered service.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift.
- Frequent pushing and pulling of transport equipment, often involving considerable weight.
- Frequent repetitive use of hands, wrists, and arms.
- Ability to bend, crouch, lift, lower, and maneuver patients and equipment as needed.
- Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.
Working Conditions
- Frequent handwashing and adherence to infection prevention standards.
- Intermittent exposure to cleaning and disinfecting agents.
- Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
- Frequent interaction with patients, family members, nursing staff, physicians, and clinical personnel.
