About the role
We are seeking a Learning and Development Superintendent to lead a site-based team responsible for all learning and development areas for our Yarwun operations, based in Gladstone.
Working a 9-day fortnight, this role is a great opportunity to demonstrate your leadership in learning and development by evolving the frontline capability of one of Rio Tinto’s key alumina assets, improving people experience, and developing frontline individuals directly impacting safety and stability of our operations.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Manager Operational Excellence, your duties will include:
Managing the frontline competency training needs analysis, its design, maintenance, governance and delivery
Managing the preboarding to shift ready program and experience across the frontline and the onboarding experience for all newcomers to the refinery
Continuously improving the approach to competency across the asset
Designing and execution of the assets learning schedule across the asset for both frontline and professional training events
Managing, leading and developing the team of L&D advisors
Building strong partnerships across both the refinery, its sister sites in Gladstone as well as the broader Pacific Operations assets
Delivering Learning & Development improvement projects collaboratively across the Pacific Operations Aluminium assets
About you
The successful candidate will have the following:
Commitment to safety, inclusion and continuous improvement of your team
Demonstrated experience leading learning and development, training, capability or workforce development functions at a supervisor level
Experience in or around operational environments
Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to partner effectively with operational leaders
Experience developing and implementing training programs and learning solutions
Knowledge of training compliance, governance and reporting requirements
Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams and manage performance

Where you’ll be working
Located in Central Queensland, approximately 10km north-west of Gladstone, Yarwun alumina refinery commenced operations in 2004. Processing bauxite from our mines in Weipa and Gove, Yarwun produces more than three million tonnes of smelter grade alumina annually.
As one of the largest industries in the Gladstone region, Yarwun employs over 700 people and has a large contractor workforce. With a focus on safely improving our process every day, the team at Yarwun challenge themselves to use existing and emerging technology to support our 24-hour operation.
