Our Educational Model

• Innovative Instructional Model (POD):
  Teachers work in collaborative POD teams to serve groups of approximately 60 students. Students rotate through teacher-led instruction, independent and personalized learning via technology, small-group work, and project-based learning, all aligned to individual learning needs.
• Opportunities & Choice (C Day):
  One day per week, students select academic supports (e.g., tutoring, study groups, office hours) and enrichment opportunities aligned to their interests, fostering ownership, agency, and engagement.
• Postsecondary Support:
  From day one, Intrinsic students receive comprehensive postsecondary planning and support, including counseling, early college credit opportunities, and financial guidance, ensuring alignment between student goals and post-graduation pathways.

 

Position Summary

The High School School Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to support the health, safety, wellness, and educational success of students. The nurse serves as a healthcare provider, student advocate, health educator, and member of the school support team.
The School Nurse assesses and treats student health concerns, manages acute and chronic conditions, administers medications, responds to emergencies, maintains health records, and collaborates with students, families, school staff, and healthcare providers.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide nursing assessments, first aid, and appropriate care for illness, injury, and health concerns.
• Manage students with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies, and other medical needs.
• Develop and maintain individualized healthcare plans and coordinate appropriate follow-up care.
• Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, parental authorization, and school policies.
• Maintain accurate, confidential health and medication records.
• Respond to medical emergencies and initiate emergency medical services when appropriate.
• Support students returning to school following hospitalization, surgery, or significant illness.
• Collaborate with special education teams, counselors, social workers, teachers, administrators, and families regarding student health needs.
• Participate in IEP and 504 meetings when health services or accommodations are required.
• Conduct or coordinate required health screenings and support communicable disease prevention.
• Provide age-appropriate health education and promote healthy behaviors and wellness.
• Recognize physical, emotional, behavioral, and mental-health concerns and make appropriate referrals.
• Communicate with physicians, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers as needed.
• Provide staff education regarding student health conditions, medications, emergency procedures, and health accommodations.
• Maintain compliance with applicable school, district, Illinois, and federal health requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Current Illinois Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher.
• Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed for School Nursing, as required.
• Current CPR/BLS certification.
• Completion of an approved school nurse preparation program, as applicable.
• Strong clinical assessment, organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
• Ability to work effectively with adolescents, families, educators, and healthcare professionals.
• Strong clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Previous school nursing, pediatric, adolescent health, emergency, or community health experience preferred
