About Us:

The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Our specialized care teams provide personalized, compassionate, expert care to patients of all ages. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.

Before You Apply
Please watch our volunteer Pre-Orientation video for essential program information. Review the volunteer opportunity description and scheduling needs below carefully before applying.

Hours & Location

  • Location: MSK’s Urgent Care Center is within Memorial Hospital at 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065
  • Shifts (subject to availability): Monday - Sunday from 9AM - 1PM, 1PM - 5PM or 5PM - 9PM.
  • Please indicate all shifts you are available for in your application.

Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking for proactive self-starter volunteers to support patients, families, and staff in our Urgent Care Center once a week in 4-hour shifts. By offering comfort, guidance, and a welcoming presence, you’ll help create a calmer and more supportive environment for everyone who comes through our doors.

As a volunteer, you may:

  • Brighten a patient’s day by stopping by with comfort items like blankets, water, pillows, or a friendly conversation.
  • Distribute and collect meal menus and help keep patients informed about upcoming meals.
  • Escort or transport patients to exam rooms or other areas as directed by staff, sometimes with a wheelchair, offering companionship along the way.
  • Assist patients with setting up MSK MyChart on their phones.
  • Help organize and label personal belongings when patients arrive to the Urgent Care.
  • Support the flow of visitors in the waiting area, helping to maintain a calm, welcoming space.
  • Restock supplies (like warm blankets, water cups, and magazines) and help prepare rooms to be ready for new patients.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Age 16+
  • Able to commit to a weekly 4-hour shift for at least 6 months
  • If you are a former or current MSK patient, you must be out of active treatment for at least one year
  • Friendly and comfortable engaging with patients, families, and staff
  • Reliable and proactive
  • Tech savvy – you may help patients download and access MSK MyChart on their phones
  • Independent and take the initiative
  • Must be flexible and willing to support areas based on daily needs, as directed by the Volunteer Supervisor

Onboarding Process (average 4–6 weeks)

  • Virtual interview (based on scheduling needs and program fit)
  • 2–3 reference checks
  • Background check & drug screen (18+ only)
  • Medical clearance (flu and other immunizations required; at applicant’s expense)

*To stay active in the program, onboarding must be completed within 30 days.

Please Note
This is an unpaid volunteer role. The Volunteer Department does not oversee paid employment, internships, shadowing, or educational programs. Our program provides meaningful, long-term opportunities to support patients and staff.
