Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled mechanical, electrical, and preventative maintenance work associated with the operation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of wastewater pumping stations and related equipment. Employees in this classification are responsible for maintaining reliable operation of wastewater pumping facilities, including pumps, motors, valves, piping, control panels, floats, instrumentation, SCADA equipment, generators, and associated mechanical and electrical systems.
The position performs routine and preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, equipment troubleshooting, pump removal and installation, station cleaning, inspections, and related maintenance activities. Employees are expected to identify potential equipment failures, diagnose problems, make necessary repairs, and document work performed in accordance with department procedures.The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. - Performs scheduled and preventative maintenance, inspections, cleaning, troubleshooting, and repairs at wastewater pumping stations.
- Conducts routine pump station inspections to identify mechanical, electrical, structural, operational, or safety concerns. Performs station cleaning and housekeeping activities necessary to maintain safe and sanitary work areas.
- Performs major and minor overhauls, repairs, rebuilding, and replacement of wastewater pumping equipment and related components.
- Installs, removes, repairs, and replaces pumps, motors, valves, piping, fittings, check valves, discharge assemblies, floats, controls, and other related equipment.
- Repairs or replaces damaged or worn mechanical components to prevent additional equipment damage and maintain system reliability.
- Inspects wet wells, valve vaults, pump equipment, piping, electrical equipment, and other station components for abnormal conditions, deterioration, corrosion, or potential failures.
- Performs electrical maintenance and repairs on control panels, motor starters, overloads, disconnects, floats, level controls, relays, contactors, and related components.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses pump, motor, control, instrumentation, and electrical problems, including systems operating at voltages up to 480 volts.
- Uses electrical test equipment, including voltage meters, amp meters, megohm meters, and other diagnostic equipment, to test and evaluate electrical systems and equipment.
- Monitors and records electrical readings and equipment operating conditions to identify abnormal operation or developing failures.
- Assists with the installation, modification, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical and control system components.
- Reads and interprets electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, drawings, and manufacturer's instructions.
- Maintains accurate, timely, and complete records of inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, equipment readings, pump removals, equipment installations, and other work performed.
- Documents equipment deficiencies and recommends corrective action when necessary.
- Records electrical readings, operating conditions, equipment information, and other data necessary to support maintenance and asset management programs.
- Responds to emergency calls, alarms, pump failures, power outages, high-level conditions, and other wastewater system emergencies.
- Participates in the department's rotating after-hours emergency on-call schedule.
- Performs related duties as directed.
High School Diploma or GED required.
One (1) year of professional experience performing maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, or installation of pumps, motors, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, or related industrial/commercial equipment.
Experience involving wastewater pumping stations, lift stations, water/wastewater facilities, or electrical controls is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant mechanical or electrical maintenance experience may be considered.Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
FWPCOA Class "C" Wastewater Collection certification must be obtained after one (1) year of employment.- Knowledge of basic motor controls, electrical circuits, control panels, and electrical troubleshooting methods.
- Knowledge of mechanical maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of safe work practices associated with electrical systems, mechanical equipment, wastewater facilities, and confined spaces.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and equipment problems and determine appropriate corrective action.
- Ability to use electrical testing equipment such as voltage meters, amp meters, and megohm meters.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, maintenance instructions, and safety procedures.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, mechanical tools, testing equipment, and other equipment required to perform the work.
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize materials, methods and equipment used in lawn care and general maintenance work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors.
- Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
- Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
- Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time
- Ability to work flexible hour’s necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Ability to participate in an after-hours emergency on-call rotation.
- While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to handle or feel objects.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.
- While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, vehicular traffic, and dampness/humidity. While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock; falling from high, exposed places; confined spaces and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
