Job Description Summary
Grid Automation offers its customers a complete range of innovative products, systems and services covering design and manufacture, as well as commissioning and long-term maintenance of Substation Protection and Automation solutions. This includes, amongst others, Protection relays, control systems, cyber security solutions, device management, asset performance, and many more. Grid Automation Software operates at the boundaries of Grid technologies, embedded software and advanced analytics solutions. If you’re passionate about embedded software and want to work on improving Grid resilience through Software, this is the job for you.We are looking for a Senior Engineer - Embedded Software Development to join the GridBeats™ team. The GridBeats™ Software Portfolio aggregates all Grid Automation applications which monitor, optimize and manage grid connected devices. It is a very complex and exciting portfolio which is setting the basis for grid connected devices management for the future.
The Senior Engineer - Embedded Software Development will be part of the Platform team and will design and deliver the embedded software that runs on, and communicates with, protection relays, controllers and other grid-connected devices. Working close to the hardware and to the protocols that connect substations to the enterprise, the role builds the low-level, real-time and communication layers that the rest of the GridBeats™ portfolio depends on. It will work cross-functionally, across all teams, coaching and mentoring junior developers, ensuring that software engineering best practices are well understood and consistently applied across the organization.
This is a hands-on role that does not end at the code repository. Deployment to site support and customer support are an integral part of the job: the successful candidate will help commission and deploy embedded software at customer substations and remotely, and will provide expert troubleshooting to resolve field issues on installed products.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Embedded Software Development & Technical Delivery
- Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality embedded software components (firmware, device agents, communication stacks and interfaces) for the GridBeats™ portfolio.
- Develop low-level and real-time software in C/C++ on embedded Linux and real-time operating systems, working close to hardware and device interfaces.
- Deliver robust, maintainable, and well-documented code aligned with team standards and product requirements.
- Work closely with architects, product owners, QA, and systems engineers to translate requirements into reliable technical solutions.
Device Integration & Communication Protocols
- Implement and support integrations between embedded software, firmware, middleware, backend systems, analytics platforms, and other GE applications.
- Develop and maintain device interfaces and industrial communication protocols — such as IEC 61850 / MMS, OPC, DNP3, Modbus and serial — to a wide range of protection relays and automation equipment.
- Contribute to troubleshooting and resolving interoperability issues across systems and devices.
Deployment, Site & Customer Support
- Support deployment and commissioning of embedded software at customer sites and remotely, including on live substation and SCADA networks.
- Provide expert customer support and field troubleshooting for installed products, and help maintain customer maintenance releases.
Engineering Best Practices
- Apply software design principles, coding standards, and best practices to ensure maintainable and scalable implementation.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical problem-solving with the team.
- Help establish and reinforce good engineering habits, including clean code, testing discipline, and reusable design.
Platform & Reusable Components
- Build and improve shared components, libraries, and services to reduce duplication and improve consistency across the portfolio.
- Contribute to development frameworks and reusable technical assets used by multiple teams.
- Support the adoption of common development practices and engineering toolchains.
Quality Attributes
- Write software with strong attention to reliability, real-time performance, maintainability, cybersecurity, and testability, for products that must operate 24x7 with little tolerance for downtime.
- Collaborate with QA, Systems Engineering, and Cybersecurity teams to ensure software meets verification, validation, and compliance requirements.
- Support defect analysis, root cause investigation, and corrective action implementation for field or test issues.
Legacy Systems & Migration
- Assist in refactoring, modernization, and migration activities for legacy systems and device protocols.
- Support backward compatibility and controlled evolution of software components.
- Contribute to technical debt reduction through incremental improvements and codebase clean-up.
Mentoring & Technical Leadership
- Mentor junior engineers and support onboarding of new team members.
- Share technical knowledge, implementation patterns, and lessons learned with the team.
- Act as a technical role model through consistent delivery quality and collaborative working style.
Required Must Have Qualifications
- A minimum of 5–8 years of experience in software engineering, with strong hands-on embedded development experience (senior candidates with significantly more experience are welcome).
- Strong hands-on experience in C/C++ for embedded, real-time, and communication software.
