About the Role:
The Extrusion Operation Technician supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of extrusion and paper packaging production lines at our Waynesville, NC facility. This entry-level role is designed to build foundational manufacturing and process knowledge while working closely with experienced operators and technical teams.
The technician will assist in operating extrusion equipment, monitoring process conditions, and ensuring product quality standards are met. This role partners with maintenance, quality, and engineering teams to support extrusion initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
What You’re Going to Do:
Assist in the operation of extrusion and converting equipment used in paper packaging production.
Monitor process parameters (temperature, pressure, line speed, coating weight) to ensure product meets quality specifications.
Perform routine line checks, inspections, and basic adjustments under supervision.
Support startup, changeovers, and shutdown of extrusion lines.
Identify and communicate process abnormalities, equipment issues, or quality concerns.
Work closely with maintenance technicians to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues.
Assist with material handling, including rolls, resins, and finished goods.
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines, including LOTO and PPE requirements.
Maintain clean and organized work areas in accordance with 5S and plant standards.
Accurately complete production logs, quality checks, and documentation.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and team-based problem solving.
What We Expect from You:
Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED equivalent
18 years of age
Two (2) years or more of experience in an industrial environment OR military expereience
A two (2) year degree or higher in Industrial Mechanical Maintenance and one (1) year experience in Industrial Mechanical Maintenance OR
Three (3) years or more experience in Industrial Mechanical Maintenance (Millwright, Pipe Fitter, Welder, Machinist).
0–2 years of experience in manufacturing, production, or industrial environments.
Strong mechanical and process aptitude with a willingness to learn extrusion operations.
Ability to follow detailed instructions, procedures, and safety requirements.
Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
Basic math and problem-solving skills.
Basic computer skills for data entry and production systems.
Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and desire to grow within operations.
Preferred Qualifications
Exposure to extrusion, converting, coatings, or paper packaging processes.
Experience operating manufacturing equipment or production lines.
Familiarity with process control concepts (temperature, pressure, flow).
Forklift or material handling experience.
Experience with SAP, MES, or other production tracking systems.
Associate degree or technical certification in manufacturing, process technology, or related field (preferred).
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs regularly.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during 12-hour shifts.
Ability to climb stairs/ladders and work at varying heights.
Ability to perform repetitive movements such as reaching, bending, and handling materials.
Ability to work in hot environments near extrusion equipment.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and industrial conditions.
