Do you enjoy diagnosing problems, working with your hands, and keeping critical infrastructure running? Sarasota County is looking for a Lift Station Technician to help maintain and repair the equipment that supports our wastewater collection system.Not currently a Lift Station Technician?
That's okay! We offer a two-year apprenticeship program that combines hands-on, on-the-job training with classroom instruction to help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a certified Lift Station Technician. This is a great opportunity to build a rewarding career while learning from experienced professionals and earning valuable industry credentials.

About this role
As an Apprentice
- This comprehensive apprenticeship program combines hands-on training, evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program, and self-paced learning to help you build your technical skills while earning valuable experience. It's a unique opportunity to develop a rewarding career and become a qualified Lift Station Technician
- Gain hands-on experience through on-the-job training with an experienced technician
- Attend evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program
- Complete the self-paced Sacramento Lift Station Training Program
As a Skilled Trades Worker II
- Install, replace, repair, and modify mechanical and electrical equipment located on and within Public Utilities facilities, including, but not limited to, pumps, pump valves, regulators, actuators, control panels, communication systems, motor controls, electronic filtering, and switching systems
- Document and maintain work orders, parts inventory, and safety records
- Proficient in the operation of an electric multimeter, voltmeter, and megohmmeter, battery operator tools, hand tools, chainsaws, and other gas-powered equipment
- Operate crane trucks to remove and install pumps from wet wells and other lift station maintenance activities
- Read and follow color codes, wiring diagrams and schematics, blueprints, plans, and written instructions
Work Hours:
- Monday – Friday
- 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- *On-Call Required
About You
Apprentice Trainee: Starting Pay: $18.09/hour
High School Diploma or its equivalent
The ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County!
Must have the ability and commitment to successfully complete an extensive two (2) year training program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of a Lift Station position
Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire
Apprentice Skilled Trades Worker I: Starting Pay: $20.10/hour
High School Diploma or its equivalent
Two (2) years of experience in applicable trades which include work in the water/wastewater collection field and or experience performing pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance including electrical troubleshooting and repairs The ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County!
Must have the ability and commitment to successfully complete an extensive one (1) year training program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of a Lift Station position
Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire
Skilled Trades Worker II: Starting Pay: $22.14 (Step 1) Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience
High School Diploma or its equivalent
Three (3) years of experience in applicable trades which include work in the water/wastewater collection field and or experience performing pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance including electrical troubleshooting and repairs
The ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County!
Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire
Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years
