The Role
Heartwood Community School is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Coordinator to support the safety, functionality, and overall appearance of our campus. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting facility issues, completing repairs, and ensuring that all building systems and equipment remain in excellent working condition.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver with strong maintenance experience who takes pride in maintaining a safe, efficient, and welcoming learning environment. This individual will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of the school by responding quickly to maintenance needs, proactively identifying potential issues, and helping preserve the school’s facilities and assets.
Responsibilities
Building Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on school buildings, equipment, furniture, and grounds.
- Complete general repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall, doors, locks, flooring, ceilings, and fixtures.
- Troubleshoot facility issues and determine appropriate repair solutions.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify maintenance needs before they become larger problems.
- Replace lighting, ceiling tiles, filters, hardware, and other building components as needed.
- Assemble, install, and repair classroom and office furniture and equipment.
- Maintain exterior areas such as playgrounds, parking lots, and school grounds to provide a safe and welcoming environment.
Facility Operations
- Monitor the condition and operation of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems, reporting concerns to the Facilities Manager when specialized repairs or contractors are needed.
- Assist with seasonal maintenance projects and campus improvement initiatives.
- Support emergency repairs and respond promptly to maintenance requests during the school day.
- Prepare classrooms, common areas, and event spaces by completing necessary maintenance and equipment setup.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with applicable health, safety, and OSHA standards.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work orders, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
- Follow proper procedures for equipment operation, tool safety, and chemical handling.
- Assist with emergency preparedness by ensuring facility systems remain operational and safe.
Operational Support and Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with school leadership, teachers, and staff to address facility concerns in a timely manner.
- Maintain an organized inventory of maintenance tools, equipment, and repair materials.
- Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors under the direction of the Facilities Manager.
- Support special events, campus projects, and other operational initiatives as needed.
Skills and Qualifications

- A strong sense of commercial building maintenance practices and preventative maintenance.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing a variety of building systems and equipment.
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance requests while responding efficiently to urgent needs.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, climb ladders, and perform the physical requirements of facility maintenance.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required.
- Associate's degree, technical certification, or trade school training in facilities maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or a related field preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial, institutional, or school facilities maintenance and repair is strongly preferred.
- Experience with preventative maintenance programs and work order management systems is preferred.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record preferred.
Compensation
We are seeking one full-time Maintenance Coordinator (2.5 FTE: full-time equivalent) for this role.
- The hours for the full-time position will be either 6am-3pm or 12-7pm.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required for special events or emergency maintenance.
- The full-time salary for this role is $80,000.
