The Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center is seeking experienced Certified Class 2 Detention Deputes to join our Emergency Response Team.

Rotating 12.25-Hour Shifts: 4 days on, 4 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off. 2 days off. 5:45 am-6:00 pm and Night shift 5:45 pm to 6:00 am. Rotate day/night shift every 90 days. *Mandatory overtime is currently in place requiring one (1) additional shift per pay period. Know your schedule 1 year in advance!

The ERT (Emergency Response Team) duties include, but are not limited to: 


  • Performing security, safety, and custodial care of inmates.
  • Responding to all emergencies and disturbances with the facility.
  • Conducting high visibility patrols and inmate escorts in a safe and effective manner.


To get started, you'll need to be:


  • At least 21 years old and a U.S. Citizen
  • A high school graduate or have a GED; Qualified applicants with a college degree may receive enhanced compensation. 
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ or more of detention/corrections experience to join the Emergency Response Team. Qualified applicants with experience with detention/corrections may receive enhanced compensation. 


  • Detention Deputy hiring salary - $51,947 to $61,066


  • Master Detention Deputy positions are available for applicants who qualify (10+ years’ detention/corrections experience and/or military/additional education).


  • Master Detention Deputy hiring salary - $61,489 to $71,611


  • A South Carolina licensed driver; or the ability to obtain a South Carolina driver’s license 


  • Honorably discharged from the military (if applicable). 
  • Have no pending cases or criminal felony convictions (misdemeanors may require expungement).


  • No THC or Marijuana use within 365 days; some drugs are automatic disqualifiers.  


  • No student loans in default status.


  • No criminal convictions


  • Must successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Detention course of instruction within the first year of employment. (if applicable)

Applicants hired for employment will also:


  • Complete a basic Emergency Response Team training program. 
  • Complete training in Housing Unit to include Behavioral Management and Specialist Management.
  • Obtain certifications in Firearms, Taser, Oleoresin Capsicum and Less Lethal Munitions with 90 days of hire. 
  • Receive over 100 hours of Emergency Response Team training annually.
