JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for a DevOps Specialist to join our new Data and AI Solutions team who will design and operate the infrastructure that gets our AI capabilities (e.g. agents, NLP pipelines, analytics workflows) into production reliably and keeps them running well. We are looking for someone on who has experience with deployment automation, monitoring, observability, and cost management for AI work, with a particular focus on agent-based systems. Experience with Databricks or the Microsoft Stack is an asset, as you will be setting up the infrastructure, designing processes and implementing best practices for the team.Reporting to the senior leadership within Data & Analytics, the DevOps Specialist will support the organization’s various data analytics initiatives by streamlining and automating the processes for building, testing, deploying, and maintaining solutions across on-premises, public, private, and hybrid cloud environments. The role supports projects covering all programs/services within Data and Analytics and throughout Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). As a key member of the department’s team, the DevOps Specialist is responsible for applying modern techniques such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) to ensure that data development and releases are automated, scalable, efficient, and reliable in secure environments. This role will work closely with project managers, leadership and other functions across the department and VCH. The DevOps Specialist collaborates with various other health authority data architects, PHSA IMITS technical teams, VCH business and analytics teams, external vendors (e.g. Microsoft, AWS) and other internal or external teams on cross-functional projects. With a primary focus of constantly improving Data and Analytics’ ability to deliver and promote on-premises and cloud-based data solutions within the approved enterprise environments, the DevOps Specialist will apply strong design and technical expertise.This work is framed within VCH’s commitments to our pillars of Indigenous Cultural Safety, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Planetary Health.QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a Software Engineering related field plus at least five (5) years’ experience as an or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as Platform, DevOps, DataOps, or Site Reliability Engineer. Certification from at least one cloud service provider is preferred (e.g. Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert).ROLE SPECIFIC EXPERTISE:• Extensive experience performing DevOps practices including but not limited to: code review, unit test automation, build & release automation, incident and change management.• Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, streamlining and monitoring CI/CD pipelines within a data-focused department/organization.• Demonstrated experience building and optimizing data pipelines (ETL) within a Databricks environment or other cloud data warehousing technologies• Demonstrated experience practicing DataOps functions and processes• Demonstrated experience working with Azure DevOps, Databricks, and Azure SQL.• Demonstrated experience developing a branching strategy to tackle monolithic repos.• Strong proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows.• Proficiency coding in Python, Bash, Terraform, ARM, Bicep or other scripting languages with a focus on automating releases or processes.• Working knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.• Working knowledge of databases (Azure SQL, Synapse, etc) and SQL.• Knowledge of Azure or other cloud infrastructure services (e.g Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps) an asset.• Ability to analyze requirements, develop architecture/design artifacts, and execute migrations from on-premises infrastructure to cloud environments.• Demonstrated hands on experience building sophisticated and highly automated infrastructure. • Ability to perform analysis of the current practices and design and implement best practices and emerging concepts.• Demonstrated understanding of DevSecOps practices.• Proven ability to stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in data engineering, cloud computing, and healthcare information technology• Deep understanding of security principles and experience in developing design patterns to ensure security, scalability, and optimization for growing data volumes.• Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills.• Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.• Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.• Strong interpersonal skills including strengths in working in a team environment with a client/user orientation.• Ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams with different lines of reporting.• Demonstrated technical leader with skills in teaching, coaching and mentoring others.• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and processes in simple terminology to internal and external stakeholders, including all levels of management.• Demonstrated attention to detail and maintenance of high-quality standards.• Demonstrated ability to work independently, meeting deadlines under pressure, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions• Works effectively under time pressure to meet deadlines, balance work priorities and resolve problems in a timely manner.• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.SHARED VALUES:You care for everyone:• You’re compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive to the needs of others.• You are respectful, treating people as equals, and valuing others’ perspectives and differences.• You are appreciative of others’ efforts and give them praise when it’s due.You are always learning:• You are open minded, always receptive to different perspectives and ways of doing things.• You are curious and ask questions to find a deeper understanding.• You share your expertise and mentor others by sharing your knowledge and experience.You strive for better results:• You are accountable, and take responsibility for what you say, what you do, and who you engage in achieving better results.• You’re a solution finder, empowered to solve the challenges we face in healthcare.• You take ownership for growth and development and personal development, always seek feedback and opportunities to improve how we do things.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
