LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (LPN)

Emergency Department / Convenient Care 

(Full-Time / Part-Time / Per Diem)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a vital role in supporting the nursing and medical team in providing safe, compassionate, and comprehensive patient care. The LPN provides direct patient care within the scope of practice established by New York State and hospital policies and procedures.

The LPN works collaboratively with Registered Nurses, providers, and other members of the healthcare team to promote quality patient outcomes, patient safety, and an efficient patient-care environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Monitor, obtain, and accurately document patient vital signs and other clinical information.
• Assess and monitor patients' condition and promptly communicate changes or concerns to the RN and/or provider.
• Provide personal care and maintain patient comfort, including assistance with bathing, feeding, dressing, and other activities of daily living as appropriate.
• Administer medications and perform other nursing procedures within the LPN's scope of practice and hospital policy.
• Initiate and maintain intravenous access as appropriate and within scope.
• Perform wound care and change dressings and bandages as needed.
• Assist with the safe transfer and positioning of patients from wheelchairs, beds, stretchers, and gurneys.
• Provide care to Convenient Care patients in collaboration with the RN and provider.
• Complete patient registration and related documentation as needed.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records.
• Scan paper documents into the appropriate electronic medical record.
• Perform Point-of-Care (POC) testing as appropriate to the patient's needs and the LPN's scope of practice.
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of patient-care areas.
• Restock supplies and equipment throughout the department as needed.
• Assist RNs, providers, and other medical staff with patient-care activities and procedures.
• Work collaboratively with nursing assistants, CNAs, MAs, CCMAs, CPTs, and other support staff.
• Oversee and coordinate the activities of NA/CNA/MA/CCMA/CPT staff as delegated.
• Follow all hospital policies, procedures, infection-control standards, safety requirements, and regulatory requirements.
• Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and hospital policy.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

Education, Training & Experience

• Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program.
• Current New York State Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.
• Previous LPN experience preferred.
• Previous Emergency Department experience preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained within three months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The LPN may be exposed to a variety of healthcare-related hazards, including but not limited to:

• Blood and blood-borne pathogens
• Infectious and communicable diseases
• Airborne contaminants
• Noise
• Dust, fumes, and gases
• Potential injury related to patient handling or behavior
• Cleaning agents and other hazardous materials

The employee is expected to follow all applicable infection prevention, safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and workplace safety requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires the ability to:

• Exert 20–50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10–25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
• Frequently walk, stand, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, and assist with patient movement and transfers.
• Safely assist with the positioning and transfer of patients.
• Perform duties in a fast-paced clinical environment for extended periods.
• Respond quickly to patient-care needs and emergencies.
