GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Skating Attendant Ice Rink - Special Service


Under general supervision, in connection with the operation of an indoor or outdoor municipal skating rink of the type indicated by the class title, to maintain order among skaters, perform routine work involving contacts with the public, perform manual tasks necessary for the operation of the public service enterprise, and to perform related work as required.

  • Patrol the rink on skates to promote the orderly movement of skaters.
  • Circulate among skaters to prevent improper skating or other activity, and to protect property. 
  • Warn persons who fail to follow the rules and report to supervisor if behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe.
  • As requested, give basic skating instruction, and assist participants in adjusting skates.
  • Referee and keep score at "in-house" ice hockey games.
  • Check shoes, clothing, and valuables.
  • Maintain order in locker rooms.
  • Monitor all public session skating events both on and off the ice.
  • Assist in the general maintenance and upkeep of the ice arena area including sweeping, cleaning and other custodial duties.
  • Assist in directing the public on ice staking activities and sports.
  • Provide excellent customer service and ensure that all policies are properly implemented.
  • During public skating, issue equipment and staff the equipment counters.
  • Supervise skating to ensure safe operations and respond to the needs of user groups.
  • Administer first-aid and perform related work as required.
  • Ensure the overall cleanliness of the arena.
  • Ability to patrol the ice while remaining alert is crucial. 
Qualifications (required):
  • At least 16 years of age.

Qualifications (preferred):
  • One (1) year of experience in public service and/or other activities involving safe ice arena operations. 

Licensing and Certifications
  • Persons employed in this class must provide their own skates.
  • Individuals entering this class are required to complete a training course in basic First Aid and CPR within 90 days of hire.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification must be able to complete a demonstration of ice-skating skills including the following techniques: 
  • Skate forward (1 lap).
  • Skate backwards (1/2 lap).
  • Perform effective stop techniques.

  • Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications:   100%
  • Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P:   100%
Additional points may be awarded for:
  • Veteran Points:   0-15 points
  • Detroit Residency Credit:   15 points

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of first aid principles and practices. 
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures for equipment and facility evaluation plan.
  • Knowledge of good customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of skating games, and sports at ice rink.
  • Ability to interact effectively with workers, supervisory personnel and the public with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to display initiative and resourcefulness in performance of duties.
  • Ability to follow instructions and do any assigned tasks. 
  • Demonstrated ability to skate with proficiency.
Physical Demands
  • The employee generally engages in light to strenuous physical activity which may include operating machinery to accomplish tasks.
  • The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and/or carry up to 60 pounds.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to conditions which may include fumes, wetness, loud noise, dust, inclement weather, and hazardous chemicals. 
  • Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
