What you'll do...
Role summary:As a Distinguished Software Engineer, you will shape the technical vision and architecture of Walmart’s next-generation traffic systems. You will lead large-scale, cross-functional initiatives, solve complex engineering challenges, and ensure our platforms remain the fastest and most reliable in the industry. This role requires driving innovation, defining long-term strategy, and mentoring teams to deliver highly available, massively scalable, and elegantly engineered solutions that set new standards for performance and resilience.
About the team:
The Traffic Foundation team within Walmart’s Global Technology Platform manages critical infrastructure connecting Walmart applications to hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. This team handles millions of requests per second, ensuring seamless scalability under high demand. It delivers performance, security, and resiliency to efficiently distribute traffic across Walmart’s global ecosystem. The team emphasizes cloud-native architecture, reliability engineering, and operational excellence to support intelligent, scalable systems. Members collaborate to drive continuous improvement and maintain robust, AI-powered platforms that uphold Walmart’s standards for quality and innovation.
What you'll do:
- Define and drive the technical vision for next-generation Traffic Foundation, shaping the long-term architecture and product roadmap.
- Architect and guide large-scale, cross-functional initiatives, ensuring the design and delivery of highly available, massively scalable, and resilient systems.
- Lead discovery and design, translating ambiguous problem domains into well-structured, high-level architectural strategies.
- Align business and technology objectives, ensuring that architectural decisions directly support Walmart’s strategic priorities and customer experience.
- Champion innovation and best practices by driving technical strategy, establishing standards, and enabling teams to deliver with speed, security, and reliability.
- Influence executives and senior stakeholders, providing technical thought leadership, building consensus across teams, and resolving complex technology tradeoffs.
What you'll bring:
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong networking background.
- Proven expertise in building and managing distributed, high-availability server systems at scale, preferably in cloud environments (Azure or Google Cloud).
- Hands-on experience designing and operating high-performance, high-throughput servers.
- Strong programming expertise in Go, C, C++, or Java with a focus on systems and infrastructure.
- Deep understanding of networking principles, protocols, and performance optimization.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and business stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, including experience writing technical documentation and presenting complex concepts.

The annual salary range for this position is $169,000.00 - $338,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
