COMPENSATION: $129,188 – $193,793 base salary

You have spent a career making sure the right physicians are credentialed, privileged and onboarded on time — and you know what it costs when the medical staff office is treated as a back-room processing function instead of the strategic partner it is. Too many MSO leaders run continuous-monitoring, peer review, bylaws and a rising provider census with a team that is short-staffed, tools that were never integrated, and a seat that is nowhere near the executive table.

This role puts the Medical Staff Office where it belongs: at the center of physician strategy for a flagship regional medical center, with executive sponsorship, a growing physician enterprise and the resources of one of California’s most respected not-for-profit systems behind you.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client — a Forbes-ranked, not-for-profit health system recognized among America’s Best Large Employers in 2026 and named one of just thirteen California healthcare organizations on the Forbes Best-in-State Employers list — is seeking a Director, Medical Staff Office for its 400-plus-bed Level II trauma center in Modesto. This is a senior leadership seat with direct partnership to hospital administration, the Chief Medical Executive and elected medical staff leaders. You will own the strategic direction and daily operations of the medical staff function: credentialing and privileging, bylaws and governance, regulatory readiness, physician recruitment coordination, onboarding, contracted coverage agreements and physician practice matters.

The campus is in the middle of the most significant investment in its history — a nine-figure cancer center and ambulatory surgery complex under construction, two newly accredited residency programs graduating their first cohorts, and a physician enterprise that added more than a thousand clinicians system-wide last year. Someone has to make sure every one of those physicians is vetted, privileged and productive on day one. You will lead a team that is respected for exactly that — not an isolated compliance function fielding complaints about turnaround time.

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
• Twelve or more years of recent, relevant experience in medical staff services, credentialing or physician affairs, including progressive leadership of a medical staff office in an acute-care hospital setting.
• Working command of medical staff accreditation standards and federal and state regulations governing credentialing, privileging and peer review, and of the operational workflows behind them.
• A credible leadership presence with physicians and executives, strong verbal and written communication, and a track record of building effective partnerships across administrative and clinical lines.
• Sound understanding of business practices, physician recruitment, compensation and strategic planning as they apply to a hospital medical staff.

Preferred

• CPMSM and/or CPCS certification through the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS).
• Experience in a multi-hospital or system-affiliated medical staff structure, including trauma, teaching or graduate medical education environments.
• Experience implementing or optimizing credentialing and privileging technology, and familiarity with Epic-based hospital environments.
• A record of leading a medical staff office through successful Joint Commission, CMS or state surveys.
