PART TIME POSITION WORKING LESS THAN 30 HOURS PER WEEK AND LESS THAN 1000 HOURS ANNUALLY
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONING OF WORK:
Performs difficult and specialized skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment.
An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in the garage.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
THE EMPLOYEE MAY PERFORM A COMBINATION OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES AND OTHER DUTIES WHICH MAY BE ASSIGNED BY THE TOWN OF SMITHFIELD:
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONING OF WORK:
Performs difficult and specialized skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment.
An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in the garage.
- Employee performs automotive and mechanical work repairing and overhauling gas and diesel motors and engines and performing preventative maintenance.
- Work requires operation of various testing equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities.
- Employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, biological substances, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils.
- Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Works Superintendent and is evaluated by observation and the quality of the work performed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
THE EMPLOYEE MAY PERFORM A COMBINATION OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES AND OTHER DUTIES WHICH MAY BE ASSIGNED BY THE TOWN OF SMITHFIELD:
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services a variety of cars, light and heavy construction equipment, trucks and related equipment and small engines such as weed eaters and chain saws.
- Diagnoses, repairs, and overhauls brakes, ignition, and fuel systems, hydraulic systems, differentials, and front and rear axle assemblies.
- Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, and other hand tools.
- Fabricates replacement parts and metal for body repairs to vehicles and equipment utilizing sanders, grinders, etc.
- Relines, replaces, and checks brakes.
- Realigns wheels and makes corrections using wheel alignment devices.
- Lubricates, repairs, and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts.
- Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and replacing wiring; tests electronic ignition systems and makes necessary repairs.
- Cleans and arranges tools and garage area.
- Associate’s or technical degree from an accredited two-year college or technical school in diesel systems technology with coursework in automotive mechanics and 2 to 5 years of experience in repairing gasoline and diesel automotive, construction, specialized equipment and small engines; or
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent supplemented by course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and 7 to 10 years of experience in repairing gasoline and diesel equipment, construction, specialized equipment and small engines; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess or obtain a valid commercial class B North Carolina driver’s license within six months of hire date.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and parts and equipment used in the repair of light automotive cars, trucks, and heavy construction and public safety equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
- Considerable knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems.
- Considerable knowledge of small engines, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, etc.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions of the class.
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematic drawings.
- Ability to operate vehicles safely.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
- Ability to establish and maintain records of work activities and parts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform very heavy exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts, and to maintain records.
