Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager and Pathologist(s) the AP Prep Technician performs a variety of tasks and procedures to prepare a wide range of specimens for microscopic evaluation using established and approved protocols. Tasks include maintenance of equipment, maintaining department supplies, specimen receiving, reconciliation of paperwork vs. specimen, accessioning, tracking and distribution of specimens and slides, filing blocks and all other duties as assigned.

Job Duties

• Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
• Accession and prep specimens for microscopic evaluation with attention to detail to maintain unique identifying information and following proper procedures.
• Inventory and request supplies to always maintain established minimum levels.
• Maintains an organized workstation to allow for efficient lean workflow and ensure workload expectations are met.
• Maintains all laboratory equipment according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures. Troubleshoot equipment as necessary to ensure proper specimen quality, processing, staining and coverslipping. Documents all maintenance records.
• Disposes of biohazardous and chemical waste according to proper procedures in accordance with State and Federal guidelines to maintain environmental safety.
• File and dispose of blocks in accordance with State and Federal guidelines.
• Perform other related duties as assigned and necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• 1 year in lab related clerical and technical skills or on-the-job training.
• Effective Communications – Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret information for proper processing of patient samples.
• Interpersonal Relationships – Knowledge of the techniques and the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
• Flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing environment and duties within a given timeframe.
• Accuracy and Attention to Detail – Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology as it relates to the job and to problem solving.

Additional Qualifications
Physical Demands
Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
